Data Recovery Recomendations

Does anybody have a good recommendation as to a quality/reputable data recovery company - that is affordable?
The only one that I've had recommended to me is DriveSavers.com, and they're around $2000.00 for my drive.
I was hoping for something less expensive, since this is going to come out of my pocket - not work's.

What happened to the drive? Is it completely dead or is it just that the data has been wiped?

I recently had a drive "die" - windows wouldn't recognise it. So I got a Linux rescue CD-ROM and booted to that. This did the trick, and I was able to recover my data to a new drive.

If yo have simply deleted a load of files and need to get them back, I would recommend File Scavenger. Very cheap and does a fabulous job.

Worley.

Like Worley says, if the drive has problems with its data and is not physically dead, then it's worth giving the software recovery tools a try. Active Undelete worked for me.

Thank you both.
Unfortunately, the drive is truly dead. I've had two "low-level" (software only) data recovery guys give it a go. They say there is a physical problem.
After a long, harsh search on many boards and web sites, I decided to go with Eco Data Recovery.
It's all very scary, balancing the need to recover this data against the cost of recovery and the element of shipping your HDD to a "stranger."
But I've given it my best go.

Matt -

What happened? (Perhaps we can avoid similar situations?)

or is it a case of "guys - you DEFINITELY need backup"

Total fluke as far as I know.
SMALL chance I hit a virus, but the first two guys to look at the drive kind of said that wasn't likely the case. Nothing they had ever heard of, at any rate.
If the recovery guys tell me anything, I'll pass it along.

So, yeah, Guys (and gals) - you DEFINITELY need backup.
:-)
