date info during capture

I've captured a lot video but never had to have the date information before. I'm going to capture video from Digital8 tapes to my hard drive and was wondering if there is any way that the date info. that is stored on the tape at the time of recording can be captured also? Most of this is vacation, kid activities and so forth. It would be nice to have the dates without having to figure them out.

You could always use this:

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/dvdate_en.htm

It's free.

In reading the information on the link, it looks like I capture within Vegas and then use the dvdate program to retrieve the date. It doesn't go into detail on how exactly it all is done. I'm not sure how the date is displayed. Does it display across the video picture continuously? I'm assuming Vegas doesn't have the capability to display the datecode recorded on the tape since you didn't mention anything about that and I would need the program you mentioned, correct? It also looks like the programs on that site need to be activated and a subscription purchased. It doesn't say how much it costs in the information, I'm assuming I have to go through the process of activation to find out.

If the date/time is on the tape (i.e., you can display it on the camcorder when you playback the tape), then it will transfer to the computer when you capture the tape. However, Vegas does not include (unfortunately) an fX that lets you display this within an event. You therefore need to use an external utility like the one John recommends. Here is a link to another thread that discusses another utility similar to the one John recommends"

A very, very nice Date/Time stamper for DV files

However, I think the utility that John linked to is better.

If you have a canopus or Datavideo analog to digital transfer, you can feed your RCA or S-video cable to that then let that transfer to digital. Just set up your camera, in the menu, to display that info on the TV and it will transfer thru the RCA / S-video. This is possible with Sony Dig 8's.
It's not much worse than a straight transfer.
If you have 2 digital 8 cams, you may be able to feed one, via RCA / S-video, into the other and let that one do the "Pass-through".
You'll have to recapture, of course.

If you use the analog output from the Digital8 camera and capture from that, how do you get the date/time information??

Johnmeyer,

You can turn on the title generator on an 8mm camera to show the date/time as part of the video.

johnmeyer,
My Sony Dig 8 has an option in the menu, that will let the date transfer thru analog outputs. I know I did this with a Sony TRV 130, a fairly basic model. When I 1st got it, I used to transfer the tapes to S-video and if I wanted, I could pass the date and counter thru with the video signal.
In the Playback mode of the menu. Go to end of menu "Others" and then "Display" and set to "V-OUT / LCD" instead of just LCD. You should be able to see the info on TV screen thru analog outs.
