De-Saturation

Sticky Fingaz wrote on 11/27/2003, 11:42 AM
I am putting some VHS tapes to DVD and noticed when I use the desaturation filter, some unwanted effects happen. Let's say the VHS tape has too much red in it (which is common) and I desaturate the video using HSL adjust or whatever, the parts where the red saturated onto another color, such as blue, is now very pixelated and jagged (or blocky...think old Nintendo games). I'd almost prefer color saturation than that. Any ideas around this one guys? Thank you!

Just wondering if you have tried using the
Color Balance function for your color correction?
This one has red, green, and blue slider controls and seems to work well.

What are you using to get the stuff out of the pc? I'm using a brand new CANOPUS ACDevio card. I've noticed that the Default Factory settings have got Contrast and Saturation set at something like 75% - while the other settings are on the 50% marker. I've put in a call with the pc builders and they are looking into it - yeah? I'm not going to and not advising you do anything until you've checked this out. . . interesting . . . I'm glad you posted this. I'll chase up my support people today.

I've said all this because although Colour Correction has got me out of fixes before, I'm not too sure that when I then pump it out, the card wont again do something. More to the point, I could be CCing for no good reason!

I use the ADVC-1394 instead of the ACEDvio form Canopus and the 1394 has ther same settings in the front side of the capture process, however with that said I'm not sure if the settings on the card controller software apply to the DV out settings.

If you have version 4 of Vegas, Color Corrector is probably the way to go. At least try it first.

If all colors seem equally over saturated, just back off on the saturation slider that's part of the Color Corrector filter. If one color seems over saturated one adjustment method is to try color balance or adjust that color's curve slightly using the color curves fitler.

If your video has a color cast to it, like a red tint that suggests you may not have your white or black point set properly. Again use Color Corrector. Using the eye dropper.

Sometimes it helps to use the threshold filter with the color corrector to first find the whitest and blackest point from which to adjust from. How will be the subject of a new tutorial coming soon.

You can also use the Saturation Adjust filter.

donp326, I think you may have a point. My contact has informed me that the settings are for Input. However, he is contacting CANOPUS UK for further "illumination" on this point . . I wait with baited breath - HA!
