De-selecting events- is there a shortcut?

Suppose you have your playhead lined up and you want to split edit everything. BUT, you have a clip selected and split edit will only split that particular clip. Is there some shortcut that lets you de-select everything? Right now I just right-click in the timeline area below where all the tracks are, then click something else to get out of that menu. But there has to be a smarter way...

Ctrl+Shift+A

Left-click anywhere out of any timeline de-selects everything.

Chienworks: Thanks. For some reason, Crtl Shift A seems to be a shortcut that doesn't show up in the keyboard prefs... like backspace.

Dsf: Left-click doesn't seem to de-select everything for me (unless it moves the playhead at the same time, which is not what I want if I already had it where I wanted to split).

Quite right. How about this: put the cursor/arrow over the playhead: the double-ended arrow appears. Right click, then ESC to get rid of the menu. Inelegant, but you don't need to press 3 keys at the same time.

Hmm didn't think of that. An equally good alternative... before I would just bring up that menu (via right click) and click somewhere else to take that menu off.

Another alternative: Instead of "Deselecting" everything, instead SELECT everything - CTRL-A

You'll get the same net result when splitting.

jetdv has it right.

In this particular situation you would simply Ctrl+A to select everything. Then when you do your split you're splitting all tracks at the cursors position.

Your way of thinking is still right on. If everything is Deselected... all tracks will split. But in this instance and with the shortest amount of keystrokes and to ensure that you're splitting everything.... select everything and split.

Hmm didn't think of that either. Neat.

Yes, jetdv has the best solution (also the most elegant). Damn.
