Nope, sorry. It would be awfully nice if there was a setting to make that the default instead, especially since it seems like that's what people would prefer the majority of the time.

Submit a product suggestion. Maybe if enough of us do they'll add it to a future version.

Thanks Kelly. BTW I received my Chienworks order today and it's really fantastic. Thanks.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but is this different from previous versions? I just upgraded to 8.0 Platinum. This is a real pain having to adjust every image individually.

Was this not an issue in previous versions or am I just imagining?

You're just imagining. Vegas in all versions except Vegas Pro 1 and Vegas Audio 2 (since neither of them had video tracks) has always defaulted to matching the source aspect and fitting the image within the frame.

Yes, you are right now that I think about it. I usually prepare all my slideshow photos prior to using them in Movie Studio. Hence, the source and output aspects would be the same. This is another good reason to edit my photos before using them.

Is it better to alter the aspect ratio on stills before adding to a project or to do it in VMS8? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Except in cases where the images are too huge for Vegas to handle, i dump them onto the timeline as-is and do all the manipulation in Vegas. No sense in wasting time saving another compressed generation of each image.

There is a way to do this as explained in the VASST training video. Right click on the first image and set the aspect ratio as desired. Then right click on that image and select copy. Then select the remaining images using the "select events to end" or by using ctrl-click to select the ones you want to change. Right click on the first image of this new group and select "Paste event attributes". The selected images will then match the attributes of the first image.

That only works well if all the images are the same shape/size. If you apply the same cropping to an image of a different shape then you'll get different results which probably won't be what you want.

That is true but in my case I only had two types of images. There were a total of 200 images about half of which were still shots with an hd camcorder. In some cases, I also used the zoom capability in the Event Pan/Crop feature to reposition/zoom the main part of the photo. It was much simpler than clicking on each of the images and correcting the aspect ratio.
