I am converting VHS and Hi8 to DVD. What method of deinterlacing should I use? Also, I'll soon be working with footage from my Sony HC96 camera. Is the deinterlacing consideration different for that footage versus the analog footage?
I did some rendering today of a Hi8 video that I digitized using my Sony camera. I did not use any deinterlacing when rendering.
From a distance the footage looked fine on my HDTV- kind of like you would expect from a VCR - but when I viewed from closer up, there were loads of lines in the footage. It was not clean at all.
Is that simply because the footage has been converted from a lower quality source or do I need to deinterlace?
Interlacing lines will always be exactly horizontal, and will resemble a comb. Imagine splitting your image up so that all the even horizontal lines are one part and all the odd horizontal lines are the other part, like two combs or forks with their tines stuck inbetween each other. drag one to the left and the other to the right. You'll end up with an image that has parts of every other line shifted horizontally from the other lines.
Is this what you're seeing when you say you see "lots of lines"? If this isn't exactly what you see happening then your problem isn't interlacing.
It could be your issue is that you're scaling up from 480 lines of Hi8 to 1080 lines of HD and the scaling is introducing artifacts.
The lines I'm seeing are vertical. The image is fine from a distance and if this is the best quality I can get, then I'm ok with that. My main purpose is to archive my old stuff and VHS quality isn't that great anyways.
I just wanted to be sure that I was setting everything properly.
Also, I tested a render using footage from my Sony digital camera and the lines don't seem to be present which leads me to believe that the lines must be due to the analog to digital conversion.
Does that make sense?
My Properties settings are as follows:
720x480 NTSC DV
Frame rate: 29.97
Pixel aspect ratio: 0.9091
Field order: lower field first
Rendering quality: Good
Deinterlace method: None
I think that the issue is the upscaling from 480 to 720 on my DVD player (and/or anything that my HDTV might be doing to upconvert).
I am using a BluRay player and I found a bunch of settings that let me choose the output resolution. I'm going to set it to 480 to eliminate any of the upscale artifacts. I'm also going to check the resolution on the HDTV to be sure it is set to 480.
At this point, I just want to verify that my settings are correct. The final result looks pretty nice, so if these settings are right, I am just going to proceed as I have been.
My Properties settings in Vegas are as follows:
720x480 NTSC DV or NTSC DV Widescreen (for my widescreen stuff)
Frame rate: 29.97
Pixel aspect ratio: 0.9091 or 1.2121 for Widescreen stuff
Field order: lower field first
Rendering quality: Good
Deinterlace method: None
I think that these are correct but you obviously know much more than me. I appreciate your help!
