I'm trying to deinterlace a clip before rendering out as a DV AVI. I've set the project properties to "progressive," and I've set the event properties to "progressive," but I still get the "jaggies." Am I missing something?
I don't belive changing the field order now will get rid of the jaggies. if the clip was captured interlaced, then it's going to stay interlaced. This is because each frame is interlaced individuatly. There is probely a way to render a de-interlaced file, but i'm not sure how. What are your outputting for? If it's for TV, the jaggies won't show up: the TV is interlaced so it worked with them fine.
If you want really nice de-interlacing from interlaced footage get DVFilmMaker. I've tested your method and DVFilmMaker does the job best. It intelligently deinterlaces only portions of the video where a certain amount of motion is apparent, so you get that progressive frame look but keep the sharpness of the original video when there isn't much motion.
There have also been other methods mentioned involving duplicating the original track, setting one to lower field, the other to upper field and then adjusting the levels. Haven't tried that but I think a tutorial may be on Sundance.
A few things to consider... If your video's going to be viewed on a tv, interlaced is not a bad thing - if it's going to be viewed on a progressive screen (PC monitor etc.) it's still not going to be as apparent watching the video as it is editing it. Consider your source video - you can blend or separate fields, remove noise etc., but there's only so much you can do before you run into a wall placed by the quality of what you started with.
I think the reduce interlace thing is for when you're using a still & outputting to interlaced. If you get a still pic, then try to divide it up into 2 fields, might get some jumping like that seen on some lower end cable tv ads.
