It's me again trying to pin point the areas where the quality of a video can be improved.
If we consider the source image entering the camcorder's lense has a quality level 100, this image passes through a quantity of filters, to finally find its way as a digital stream creating a file that we capture in VMS. The challenge is of course to maintain as much of the initial quality level through each step, by squeezing all the useful video and sound components in a stream of data with a bandwidth of a few thousand kilobits per sec.
I am always disappointed by the lack of sharpness of what is produced. Deinterlacing seems to have a major role in the sharpness we can get. I have found this site www.100fps.com that explains there is more than one deinterlacing technique that can be applied.
I believe the importance of deinterlacing is underestimated, and that the automatic deinterlacing functions provided are inefficient as to what can really be obtained.
I am sometimes impressed by the sharpness of some videos on-line. I believe careful deinterlacing can help !
BTW, as a Sony camcorder owner (DCR-HC18E PAL) I would like to ask Sony what type of interlacing they put into these devices, so we can undo it at best !
The best way to get rid of interlacing problems is to buy one of these new camcorders that offer to record in progressive mode (not interlaced), but they are so expensive...
