Occasionally when adding tracks to a vegas project, I
experience a track delay....specifically, when playing the
new track back, there's a slight delay, and the tracks
aren't locked in the same time. Advice? thanks...
We would need some information about your system before we could
really help you out with this matter...
This could come from background programs, virtual memory swapping,
fragmented/slower hard drive, or soundcard drivers... however, you
say occasionally this comes up, so there must be some possible
variable that comes up every once in awhile on your system that does
not always exist.
What type of hard drive are you using, and how much RAM do you have?
Before using Vegas, you could try to hit your Control key, Alt key,
and Delete key and then hit "End Task" on each program running in the
background, leaving only Windows Explorer and Sys_Tray (System
Tray)... this would eliminate the possibility of background programs
slowing your system down.
You could add more RAM to your system, this always helps the
performance out in ALL situations... you could also try to run the
Windows defrag program and defragment all of your hard drives.. you
could check to see if your soundcard has newer soundcard drivers
available... you could also check to see if your video card has newer
drivers available.
Thanks.

How are you adding the new tracks? Recording? Dropping in a new file?
How are you busses routed? Multiple main buses? Are the assigned to
different audio devices?
The more details, the better.
Thanks

I did an evaluation of Vegas Pro and had the same problem. The last
thing I did was measure the latency of the application. Everything
else about the application I loved.
I tested the latency by recording on track 1 and 2. I then played
it back though the Motu 2408,TDIF to a Tascam TM-D1000 mixer and then
to speakers. I then mic it, sending it back through the system to be
recorded.
Doing it this way I simulated a real world recording session and was
able to very accurately measure the delay. I got a results of between
50 and 200 msec by playing with buffering values. Below 50 msec I
started to get dropouts.
Doing the same test with Cakewalk Pro 8, it was a very low 1 msec.
I have done recordings with as many as 14 tracks being played back
while recording 2 tracks with no problems.
I sent an E-mail to Sonic Foundry and got the following response
from Joel Lorberblatt
"Wayne, this sound card has known problems with latency, please
check their website for updated drivers. Cakewalk addresses the
hardware directly, I believe, this is why they get around the latency
issue, we use the standard waves drivers."
I downloaded the latest drivers from Motu, loaded them with no
improvement.
The above reply states that Cakewalk addresses the hardware
directly, a very superior method versus relying on Bill Gates
interfacing drivers.
Peter, I would still like to get Vegas Pro, it does have an
excellent user interface, but it is useless for multitrack recording
with the latency problem.

The latecny you are getting is related to the way the 2408 deals with
buffering in the hardware. I am very aware of the issue and am
working on a solution with MOTU. I can say that running the same type
of scenario that you did with a Layla and a MIDI Man Delta, the delay
was on the order of the A/D convert latency - 1 to 3 ms. The problem
is a compatability issue between the 2408 and Vegas. I am working on
a solution.
Cakewalk does not talk directly the hardware. It still uses the
standard Wave drivers that the audio hardware vendor supplies. There
are actually special "hooks" that MOTU added to the 2408 drivers to
deal with the way Cakewalk expects wave drivers to work. These are
specific to Cakewalk though. These hooks are switches in the driver
that alter the way the 2408 returns information based on expectations
by CW.

Thank you for the response. Would you please E-mail me when you
have a fix.
