Delete older version on upgrading?

Im running Vista Home Premium. Upgraded from Vegas 6 to Vegas Pro 8. and DVD Architect 4.5
Older versions of Vegas 6 and Architect 3 still remain on my computer. Do I need them to run the upgrade or can I safely delect them?

I like to keep the older version on my computer until I feel comfortable with the new one before I delete it.
They install to separate folders so there won't be any conflicts.
Keep in mind that versions aren't backwards compatible so, if you decide to work on an older project in V8, save it immediately under a new name - just in case!!

You can safely uninstall the old version, but note that the Vegas 6 uninstall might remove some of the files that were added by Vegas 8. This is because, while each version does install into its own version-specific folder, some plug-in files are kept in a Sony "shared" folder. The fix is to re-install Vegas 8 so that it puts those files back.

All you need for your upgrade is your serial number so you can delete the older versions if you want either before or after your new install. They're not connected to each other in any fashion. But I like to do what rs170a does... I keep the older version on until I feel comfortable.

In fact, if you buy from Sony, the only thing you need the old serial number for is to get a discounted price on the new version. You don't need the old serial number to install the new one. You don't even have to have ever had the old version installed.

I've heard rumors in here though that some of the B&H special deals require the old serial number to install the new version. No experience with that myself though.

Keep the old version on your system. Take all your current Veg files and archive them to CD or something before you start opening them in V8.

Many people have been just fine with VP8 but it's been pretty rough going for others. Hedge your bets, back up your projects, and keep that old version of Vegas ready to use.

And, just to reiterate, you can't open a VP8 project in previous versions of Vegas.

I got a new computer running Vista, and I was forced to install Vegas 6 on it before the B&H upgrade to Vegas Pro 8 would install. As per phone instructions from the Sony rep, I’ve never started it and it’s just sitting there taking up room. I’d like to uninstall Vegas 6, since I’ll never use it, but not if it’s going to remove plug-ins . . . and reinstalling VP8 to get the plug-ins back brings me full circle because the B&H upgrade won’t even show up without V6 (or V7) present.

Any suggestions?

I've got every version back to V4 installed, it's not like they takeup a lot of space. The older versions tend to run smoother so I quite often run many projects in quite old versions. You can go forwards but not backwards.

Say no more. Good point.

But you should be able to just back-up the Shared Plug-Ins folder (by default, it's C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins) to a safe place (like your Desktop or C:\temp), and then uninstall Vegas 6. Go back to Windows Explorer and see if the original Shared Plug-Ins folder is still there and has file. If so, then you're probably okay. If not, copy your backed-up one back into the Sony directory.

I bought my upgrade version of Vegas Pro 8 from the "Videoguys". Why would there be a difference in the upgrade from Sony or another distributor as sugguested in a earlier reply? About having to have the previous version installed in order for the upgrade to work.

I suspect it's because when you order from Sony directly on this site they can tell if you've got a previous license or not, since you register your licenses on this site.

Other resellers aren't going to be privy to this information. They can't offer you a discounted price because they can't tell if you have paid for a previous version or not. The only way they'll be able to check is at install time on your computer.

I'm only speculating. I've never purchased anywhere else besides directly from here. I also have no idea about VideoGuys. I'm only guessing based on the reports i've seen in this forum about B&H upgrade purchases.
