It’s not a question of refusing to acknowledging shortfalls, it’s how to go about it.
Many of us have several times asked if something is possible, and if not, requested that it be added to the feature list next revision.
This is somewhat different from saying VEGAS SUCKS - WHAT A TERRIBLE SITUATION etc … that is not how a serious professional goes about things.
If, as you say, you recognise that Vegas can “do some pretty neat things”, you should respect those who have made this possible for you, and address them accordingly.
ZippYGaloo I DONT disagree with you but you seemed to have missed the point of the FORUM here ITS WHERE we all solve problems with help advice and explore the weaknesses and try to come up with solutions and also a way to tell sony what we want in the future No product can stay cutting edge indefinately that is why upgrades are neccesary.
*********************************************************************************************
VEGAS is the best video editor on the market AND YOU know thats true otherwise you wouldent bother with it.

Right Clicking the keyframe is the way it should be done. Zipps are you telling Vegas how to run its program vooice activation programming is not here yet{ I dont think}
What you have to do is read the instruction book or learn from trial and error (YOU WONT FORGET NOW WILL YOU) about the key frames.
Four Channel Capture is an idea. Perhaps If enough people want this facility. If its a Bona fide question Then ask sony nicely and perhaps it could be considered at a later time.
Zipps now more than ever you are on TRIAL for being a PLANT trying the old justification based on previous posts. That have no foundation just wont hack it. And Its now becoming clearer to me what your aim is.
So what about these Forums How much do you pay to use this facility or the free downloads or the new builds. Im sure Sonic Foundry has/will do a lot in the customer relations area. What about Satish and all our other friends that are part of the vegas experience. For my money Vegas is a lot more than a simple download its got life. vitality. fun.
You say there are cameras that can record 4 channels of audio. If they can do it simultaneously please inform me which ones can becuase I've been looking for such a beast. I know on some I can record say tracks 1&2 and then record tracks 3&4 but not all four at once.
As far as I knew the same went for playback. Being able to record to the 4 tracks in camera would be a simple way to record surround if you know what I mean but I hadn't pursued this in VV as I thought nothing would record it that way.
Every piece of software you use works with saving your changes every once in a while. Wether it's Microsoft Word, Photoshop etc. everybody that uses software can make the mistake of forgetting to save changes, or saving unwanted changes (before checking if it's ok to save).
You can't blame the software for forgetting to save or changes or saving the wrong changes.
That's like blaming a plane for not being able to land properly when the pilot forgets to put out the wheels.
I agree with you that people shouldn't be putting Vegas on a pedastal and treating this software like a queen. But the only way to improve it is:
- ASKING people if there are solutions for your problems, and not blaming the plane when you are a bad pilot yourself. It's like coaching a football team. Telling the players that they're doing good, but that they need some improvement works better than screaming at them and telling them they suck. That doesn't motivate people.
That's what someone means by addressing them accordingly. Respect all the free effort people are doing by supplying this forum, willing to help you. They don't NEED to do this.
Hope you only press CTRL-S when you're sure it's alright to save, so you're plane will land allright.
How can you have any spare time in your day, Zippy? Unless Vegas is the only software you use.... Ever hear the phrase "Save early, safe often."? If you're so Polyanna to think that within the wild complexity of modern computers (with hardware, BIOS, OS, and software coming from disparate sources) that a singular piece of sofware is going to be perfect ... you're dreaming.
I don't think many take you very seriously -- even if your complaints turn our to be valid. Your delivery stinks, man.
"You say there are cameras that can record 4 channels of audio. If they can do it simultaneously please inform me which ones can becuase I've been looking for such a beast. I know on some I can record say tracks 1&2 and then record tracks 3&4 but not all four at once."
I was looking at the specs of the Canon XLS-1 (or whatever the model name is; their high-end camera), and it behaves as you describe. You can record channels 1&2 in 12-bit, then come back and add two more channels also in 12-bit. Nothing I read made it sound like the camera could record four channels simultaneously.
4 channel, 32 bit, 12K audio is professional? C'mon! Talk about exposing ridiculousness. No professional uses that crap. And *most* products DON'T capture this garbage.
Zippy, you are under constant attack because you say ridiculous things. Get real. If you found ANY, JUST ONE real bug, problem, workflow, error, and reported it in a normal sense, it might make sense.
I'll wager you are using a garbage machine with a cheap mobo, low end proc, budget RAM, off brand 1394 card, with sloppy hard drives for all the junk you report. But you'd call yourself a 'pro?'
Another example is when you report that an envelope deletes key frames.
Duh. If you instruct it to delete, which is what you MUST do to lose it, then it goes away. Kinda like "when I turn the key off, my car stops." Rather than make a silly statement like "I don't want to lose keyframes when I delete them" how about suggesting another workflow? You'd get credibility, which right now you have none of.
Everyone listens to you but no one hears you because you make outlandish, crazy, and off the wall statements that so far, you've been proven wrong in each and every instance to my knowledge. Opacity won't go to 40%? Hmmmmm..... I can think of 3 ways to do that one. So did everyone else.
External monitor won't work? I have to check mine occasionally, because I want to be sure INTERNAL is working. I use external exclusively on all of our systems, (11) and on my laptops (4) every single day.
You don't like Multiple Undos? I guess you never worked with Photoshop when it was one undo only? or with Media Studio, which at one time was a single undo?
How would you propose this?
See, Zippy....because YOUR workflow is apparently haphazard and reckless, don't blame Vegas for your own shortcomings. Either you know the app or you don't. Asking for help vs screaming about silly and ridiculous stuff doesn't help anyone and irritates everyone when you do it.
You want change? Then go at it without screaming, and develop some credibility first.
No one is 'protecting Vegas like it was their first born son' but rather responding to your far-out impotent cries of "FOUL" when you are the one in the wrong. THAT's why people won't take you seriously.
For all I know, maybe you are a multi-Emmy winner that has produced monster footage that simply can't figure Vegas out. Or, you could be a 16 year old student that hasn't even made a simple slide show. Regardless of who, what, where you are, it's clear you DON'T understand Vegas and it's tools. And based on the 4 channel/32k/12 bit comment, you don't know much about 'professional' either.
Sounds like a farewell ,Zip
Your smartass, know it all, dickhead attitude is why people cant take your observations seriously. Vegas has faults, pointing them out is one thing, being a demanding jerk is another. Maybe lay off the crack, take a deep breath ,count to 10, and then post your problem without caps, without the word sucks, garbage,etc.,etc,.. You might be shocked how much help you receive.
You are one stressed out dude, take a chill pill and go for a walk.
Wow, Skippy, oops... Zippy said something nice for a change:
"We all know Vegas can do some pretty neat things"
Lets address your points. All software has 'flaws" in the sense it may not do things as well as YOU think it could or compared to similar applications that may do some things differently. Nobody here ever said any different. Nobody is suggesting Vegas is perfect, certainly not the Sony engineers or they wouldn't be working on the next version.
In fact every so often someone starts a 'wish list' thread that suggests what could be improved in the next version. And to nobody's surprise the next version of Vegas includes many of the suggestions. You on the other hand Zippy, only find fault. Mostly nitpicking. After a while when someone only does that like that little boy crying wolf to get attention, you discredit yourself. That's the situation you find yourself in.
The truth Ziipy, is you don't listen very well. You could learn a lot from the people here, you prefer to jump up and down, getting some kick out of finding trivial flaws like your recent 'can't set opacity to 40%" thead. You know why you have near zero creditability with a lot of people? Because when you're proved wrong, like in that thread, you don't acknowledge your error, you don't thank the people that set your straight, oh no, you rather hunt for the next minor thing to whine about. That is being professional? Hardly.
The other thing I noticed Zippy is you seem to have poor work habits. Your latest thread confirms that. You ALWAYS save your work at regular time intervals. That's true of Vegas or any application like a document you're working on in a word processor, a spreadsheet, whatever. To not do so is simply foolish. To then blame the application for your foolishness is stupid.
Actually i think we need to cut Zippy a bit more slack
I'll agree he's obnoxious but unfortunately while he may be unique on this forum he certainly ins't in the industry as a whole and the problem isn't getting better.
There are a lot of people with many years of experience either out of work or under employed. They've been replaced by young jocks who had a few bucks, bought a NLE, threw a few things together and finally bagged a real paying job. Their cients probably got a quote from a pro and thought lets see how much this young guy can do it for. He thinks ah, at last and the pro quoted them $20,000 and four weeks to do it, hell I can do it for $5,000 and in a week, piece of cake.
What the pro knew and they didn't is that a 20 minute video doesn't take twice as much effort as a 10 minute one, its more like four times. He knew he has to sleep, take a walk, sit back and think long and hard about eack cut etc. If he doesn't do that it gets stuffed up, backups are not done, gaps are left between clips.
So the young jock stresses out totally, somehow pulls it all together, maybe avoids getting divorced in the process and then thinks ah well at least next time when they come back to me I'll quote them the right amount. Hah, next time they just find another sucker!
I've witnessed much worse behaviour than Zippys, at worst he's just plain silly and impolite, I've seen people who've stuffed up and trying to blame everyone but themselves resorting to physical threats.
Don't forget, Harpo, just because we aren't complaining and "b. . ing" like you do, is no reason to think we are not asking for things of and suggesting things to Sony. Many of us have actually used the Suggestions part of the forum, just like SoFo asked us to do, and I am sure Sony will continue looking for real suggestions in the Suggestion Box. Gee, what an interesting and novel idea.
You say there are cameras that can record 4 channels of audio. If they can do it simultaneously please inform me which ones can becuase I've been looking for such a beast. I know on some I can record say tracks 1&2 and then record tracks 3&4 but not all four at once.
farss, The Canon XL-1 and XL-1s (and, I believe, the GL series as well) can easily record all 4 channels at once. I use it frequently to record ambient sound with the on-camera mic on stereo 1 and pick up voices on stereo 2 with my wireless mic.
In fact, this facility alone is the reason I MUST use Scenalyzer for some of my capturing. If Scenalyzer had a manual entry for batch capture, I'd probably use it full time. Then again if Vegas allowed 4 channels (selectable per batch entry, preferably) I could use it full time.
The more and more Zippy spouts off the more and more I think the guy is an employee of Adobe. Im sad to say that today, I had to finally use the (ignore this user) featue.
I feel much better. No more Zippy and my world is fine.
You could actually connect 4 external mics and record each of them on separate channels. Two RCA connections on the back of the handle for stereo 1 and two RCA connections on teh side of the handle for stereo 2.
Direct from the book:
The XL1 can record sound in three audio modes:
• 16-bit (48kHz, 2 channel) for the highest sound quality
• 12-bit ST-1 (32kHz, 2 from 4 channels) for recording on two channels (stereo 1), leaving two channels (stereo 2) free for you to add new sound at a later date.
• 12-bit ST-1, 2 (32kHz, 4 channels) for simultaneous recording on four channels (stereo 1 and stereo 2).
Manual recording level is available on both Stereo 1 and Stereo 2. However, Stereo 2 is more flexible in that there is an individual control for left and right. Stereo 1 has a "Level" (volume) and "Balance" (Left/Right) control. Stereo 1 and Stereo 2 can be set to Line, Mic, or Mic ATT 20.
