At work we are exclusively FCP (except my personal pc with vegas).
So far, these are the facts. But, the good news is, Sony is trying to change that. It will take lots of time.

Zippy--

After having read your posts over the last month, are you *sure* that you lost the gig because of the software?

David.

Yeah, most clients don't really care what edting system you use, they rarely even ask. All they care about is that you have the capabilities to do what they want done, that it will be a good final quality product, and that you can finish it on time. All of which Vegas is completely capable of. I think there might be more to this than just software...wink, wink, nudge, nuge, say no more.

Maybe they invested [wasted] alot of money on a MAC FCP 4 workstation......

If you are as talented with Vegas as you say, get some test footage from them and deliver them what they want, on spec.... [means for free, Zip]

While I no longer try to change other people's minds [especially producers and other editors] about FCP it is EASY to get them to change thier minds about Vegas... By proving it is capable. Just show them something!

Getting a post house that has already got MAC suites, to build you a custom PC suite would take some convincing, but Vegas would not be where the limitations show up, the final results are up to you Zip.
Zulqar-Cheema wrote on 4/1/2004, 12:49 PM
Did they specify a camera s well, or perhaps your car , clothing etc. ?

maybe they need to take it further and FCP has an EDl that is compatible with that.
jwall wrote on 4/1/2004, 1:55 PM
Come on guys....

Everyone can run into a selective client. Perhaps the client had seen a great project, asked the editor about it, and gotten "It's because of FCP" as an answer. So, in their mind they're thinking, "If I ever need a similar video, I'm only going with someone who uses FCP." Zippy somehow got on the shortlist for the job, perhaps because they liked what work he had shown them. However, since Zippy wasn't an FCP editor, he didn't get the job. I don't think it's that unrealistic. Sure, Zippy can get riled up pretty easily, but no one really knows what kind of work he does.

"Sure, Zippy can get riled up pretty easily, but no one really knows what kind of work he does. "

That's correct,
Zippy would you care to share any of your work with the rest of the group?

A client asking what tools you'll use is like the patient asking his surgeon step by step details of the procedure, or the home buyer asking the contractor what type of hammer and saw he likes, or the attorney what law books are in his library.

In other words you had a STUPID client. Better off they're now somebody else's headace.

Good friggin' riddance.... I'm sure the people at Apple will be thrilled to have you as a customer.

Is it me or every time we turn around, Zippy always has something negative to say in regards to Vegas? Personally, I hope he does move to FCP just so we dont have to read his posts anymore.

TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/1/2004, 4:35 PM
I work for a guy who used Avid & FCP. Spent 5 (only 5) minutes showing him what could be done and he's hooked. Doesn't matter if Vegas has to render. He liked it that much. :)

Guess it's who ya know. :)
garo wrote on 4/1/2004, 7:24 PM
Yeah, funny how Zippy gets all kinda silent when asked to show some of his stuff to us. For me it's put up or shut up Zippy.

You're worse than people who don't vote but complain about the government all the time, because clicking the (Ignore This User) button actually works.

Quit bitching and do something about it.

I sympathize with Zippy and agree with Bill. My wife just got a great contract which may last five years but it took some work. First of all, the guy wanted BetacamSP and either AVID or Media 100 becasue that is all he has ever worked with.

I gave up trying to explain that a DSR 500 WS with braodcast lens yields better video than a BVW 400 or D30/PVV3. Finally sent a link to a used equipment site showing a D327/PVV1 for 5500 CAD and a D35/PVV1 for 13,000 CAD. Offered to buy one of the units if BetaSP was critical. As for the AVID, the demo reel cut with Premiere Pro/Matrox RT 100 Pro said everything, including refuting the competition's ludicrous claim that DVCAM is only slightly better than consumer format miniDV. So there are clients with preconceived notions of what a "professional" shop must use. Unfortunately we have either buy a J2 BetaSP/BetaSX player for all his legacy footage or bite the bullet and spend a week converting it all to DVCAM with a rental machine via YUV. Wish I hadn't dumped our old and tired but still functional BVW 50.

I don't know why everyone is hung up on AVID anyway. As far as I am concerned, being a level three or most excellent AVID certified editor just means the guy or girl knows where to click, doesn't have any correlation to their editing talents. I edit with an AVID Media COmposer at my day job but I don't feel particularly superior to those using Premiere, Vegas, Editus, FCP etc.

Hang in there Zippy, most important thing is you are comfortable with yourself as a editor/shooter whatever. Afterall, the only person's opinion you have any control over is your own, right?

You won't name your show show because there isn't one. You're infamous in this forum because you lumber around here like a bull in a china shop being rude most of the time, demanding answers the next, trying to be funny in the next and lately at least, just plain wacked out.

This latest incndent should be your awakening. You NEED Final Cut Pro.

Zip, what's your show? You working on it won't make any difference if we watch it. Heck, I don't even get any TV stations at home, so if you tell me i'll probley go out of my way to find someone with DirectTV or cable to check it out.

It isn't one of those scrambled porn channels on C-Band, is it? :)

Hey all...I am not a client- but I have used Avid Symphony, owned a media composer, owned Avid Xpress and owned FCP 3. I purchased Vegas and never looked back... my Mac and FCP collect dust unless I need cross platform CD's (Director) and the Avid Xpress is removed and in the closet. Sold composer and no longer rent Symphony...Vegas has done everything I have needed including a weekly TV show and yes...a National spot on TNN...to be honest with all of you...it is never the tools but the creative talent that creates success. Vegas can get you there...it's up to you to do the rest! I agree with all of you- the client usually never asks what tools you use- only for samples of your work and then you win or lose on your own...
David_Kuznicki wrote on 4/2/2004, 5:44 AM
Zip--

I have to ask-- if your work is so good, and your shows are so well done, then why are some of your questions so basic?

If you've managed to sell yourself to the right people, while having literally no idea of how to use your tools, please, share your pitch with the group. We would all have something to learn from your salesmanship.

David.

It is highly unlikely that Zippythedrool lost a job because he doesn't have FCP. It is more likely he lost the clients phone number.

This forum is rough when it comes to Zippy. Obviously the guy is a d*mb*ss, just read some of his posts. What I don't get is why everyone entertains his musings? He obviously has no body of work, or even a 15sec slice of something he can share - or he's too big a p*ssy to share for fear everyone will tear him up.

Why aren't you sharing tough guy? Don't even say you have no place to put something cause if you can make TV shows you can get a video online. Put up man...everyone's calling for it. Grow some balls.
