Deleted video still there

I'm trying to clean up some video (some text that's not needed in our family super 8 video that was converted to VHS then captured to mpeg-2). I do a split at beginning of unwanted video and at the end (two seperate operations - I know you can drag, etc but I feel safer doing it this way). Anyway I then delete that unwanted video and drag the right video against the left video (obviously a beginner talking here - I used to be a broadcast technician but retired in 80's from that profession and the technology has gotten away from me to keep up with - has to do with losing brain cells I guess). Anyway back to problem --- when I click before the edit and play I still see some of the old video after the edit that I thought was gone. Can't figure out how to get rid of it. I'm sure there must be a simple answer but can't find it. Thanks.

How zoomed in were you when you did the splitting operation? You may not have actually split where you thought you did. Zoom into the time line by clicking the + sign in the bottom right. You can zoom in so far that you can see each frame individually when you hit the arrow key to advance or rewind. Watch the numbers at the bottom to see if you are moving a frame at a time or a second at a time etc. Then when you are sure you are frame accurate do your splitting. There will be no sign of the deleted footage. Be careful when you drag them together so that you do not reintroduce the deleted footage. This is non-destructive editing so you have not eliminated the footage just shortened. You don't want to lengthen it again. One way to make sure is to activate the auto ripple feature. Then when you delete the unwanted footage the gap will close automatically.

As far as getting it on the right frame what I do is probably not standard but I just look at preview when dragging the vertical bar marker which works now even better now that you told me about auto ripple feature. So I must have occasionally been overlapping when dragging the right video back to the left video. I had about 20 such splits to do after you gave me that tip and worked perfectly! Thanks so much. Great people on this forum!!

You are welcome, glad I could help.
You might want to be sure to turn the auto ripple feature off after you have used it for your specific purpose. It can raise havoc if it is on and you don't realize it when doing other editing.

On the other hand, i find the havoc comes from turning auto-ripple off. There are very rare and few times when i need it off. Almost all of the time editing works much better with it enabled.

As long as you *know* what it does and are aware of what it will affect, it's usually more helpful to have it on.

And I think that just goes to show "To each his own". I was just repeating info that I had gleaned from this and other forums. I personally leave it off.
