Well, the easiest way is to simply remove one of the halves of the video you split (with Auto Ripple turned off) and then just extend the remaining portion of clip to fill in the gap.

Since splitting doesn't actually remove anything from the video, extending one portion of the video effectively removes it.

I tried to extend the portion that had the split I wanted to delete, but couldn’t accomplish what you were describing. Inserting a spit, then deciding later that I don’t want the split there and not being able to get rid of it is a little frustrating. It confuses what I’m trying to do. Is that the split I want to use, or not. Be nice if I could just delete a split.

I’m a real greenhorn when it comes to video editing. I did a lot of it about 8 years ago on the job, but that was with other video editing software, and I’ve slept since then, so it’s almost like starting all over again, and I’m only editing a video once every few weeks or so. So much I don’t understand, and I don’t work with it enough to get a good grasp on it, but I’d have to say my biggest frustration is not being able to remove a split I change my mind about.

Any other suggestions?

Any reason Vegas doesn’t include the capability to delete splits?

When you split an event, it creates TWO WHOLE COPIES of the original event.

1) Delete the right-hand event that was created after the split (with auto-ripple "off").
2) Click-drag the right-hand edge of the remaining event until it hits a notch. That is the end of the original event.
3) That's all there is to it. It works this way, always.

There is a way to delete splits; Undo. Of course, this is only useful right after doing the split before you've done anything else.

The thing is, if you've gone on and done more editing after the split then you may no longer have the two split events right next to each other, running contiguously. If this is no longer the case then Vegas wouldn't know just from a "delete split" command itself how you wanted to handle the situation. Do you want to extend the left event into the right one? Or extend the right one back into the left one? Or if you've moved the parts around do you want to move them back to where they started, possibly effecting everything else on the timeline? If you've removed some from the middle where you split should that be restored, and if so how much? Deleting a split is not a simple task. It can require a lot of user interaction to accomplish what you want.

And, using the method Steve & Musicvid have outlined supplies the necessary user interaction, and is therefore the correct method for deleting a split.

On the other hand, if you haven't done any other editing and therefore none of these other decisions are necessary, Undo does it.

If you have gone too far making changes on the time line to want to' undo' them all to get back to the spit then consider deleteing the whole split "event" (RIPPLE OFF!! ) and then drag down a clean copy ..... OR highlight both pieces, right click and make them a group so they are effectively one again ..?? The 2 pieces need to be butted togerther of course to get what you want... K.

musicvid.... Sorry. I can not make this work.

knockatoone... That works, but the problem that remains, and still continues to confuse the time line, is the little blue triangles that denote a split. As long as they remain, what I am doing remains confusing.

Like I said, I am green when it comes to video editing, and most of the terminology. I have to wonder why one can delete transitions, but not delete a split.

In the case of the splits I want to delete, I have placed the split, but have done nothing at all with the events on either side of the split. I have just gone on and done other things and decided later that I no longer want that split where I put it, so I can’t just use the undo button.

Still open to other suggestions.

Next question ... why do you think you need to delete the split?
MSmart wrote on 6/5/2011, 8:44 PM
Right! Just leave it there.

Now that you understand how it works, you're a little less green and you won't be so confused by the blue triangles.

wingspar,
If they absolutely have to go then delete both sides of the split and drag down a fresh copy of the video - remember that doing things on the time line to vidios or stills does not change the original in any way - the original remains unchanged!! It is ncie to know that when you have really screwed it up and all else fails - punt and start over with another "original "!! K

"musicvid.... Sorry. I can not make this work."

Have you locked your event by some chance?
Right-click->Switches->Lock (should not be checked).

With Auto-ripple "off" the directions I gave will work. Promise.
