deleting time on timeline

I know how to insert more time but I can't figure out how to remove empty time on the time line, other than moving everything over, which is cumbersome. Is there a simple way to remove not just events but the time they fill on the timeline.

Make sure you have ripple edits enabled. Double click in the empty space and it will be selected as a region. Hit the Delete key. All the events to the right will be moved over automatically.
