Deleting Video on the time line using Ripple Edit

Zulqar-Cheema wrote on 10/22/2002, 1:02 PM
Hi, I want to highlight an area on the time (say 5 seconds) line and be able to delete that whole vertical section, with all clips from the right filling in the gap, including areas were there are no video clips. At present there is no video on the first clip in the delete, but there is some further up, this does not seem to come down. I am using the ripple edit, but that seems to work on time lines that actually have clips where you are deleting. I would also like to do the reverse as well. With Story board this is not a problem all clips move up or down, but this one seems to work in mysterious ways.

You might try Ctrl-A (to select all events), or SHift-Ctrl-A (to de-select all events), then delete or cut.

PM I had my doubts on this but I tried it and it works just as I wanted, thanks very much for your time and trouble, sham the manula seems to make no mention of it, unless it is hidden somewhere.

Martyh, I am NOT sure if I get the whole technique alright, because sometimes I mess the whole project and must correct a lot of events by hand :-((

Recollecting:
- To insert, say, 30 sec of blank space in all tracks: Select all track headers, place cursor at vertical position for insert, switch Ripple Edit On, Insert Time 00:30:00 hit OK.
- To delete, say, 30 sec of time across all tracks (with or without events): Select all track headers, select zone to delete, switch Ripple Edit On (irrelevant ?), hit the Delete button.

It seems right to me, but sometimes it doesn't work. For example, insert sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (doesn't insert anything).
And both insert and delete sometimes mess a lot of my keyframes (yes, I lock keyframes to events). To be sure, keyframes not related with any peculiar event, don't move.
And, marks and regions don't move.

Ripple should be on to ensure ripple...

You might try Ctrl-A which selects everything, not just selecting track headers.

To move markers and regions, I think you need to use Shift-Ctrl-A to select none.

Ocassionally a TM keyframe will be just outside of the boundary of an event, which will cause it to not move. A detail yes, but an important one.

GG and MartyH
A cumbersome process by all accounts. Very prone to fail ...

I confess being awkward. And I just can't remember everything that must be done *before* inserting/deleting across tracks.
And then, I do my thing but just *forget* to de-select the headers. So, later on I add one event to one track and see it added across all tracks <g>.
Well, I will write it down on a piece of paper ... one more checklist to go.

Wouldn't it be nice if VV had some more options under Edit ?
For example: Insert -> Time -> Ripple Insert time (all tracks) at Cursor position.
This would ripple ALL: orphan keyframes, marks, regions, ...

And what about this one ?: Delete -> Ripple Delete selection across tracks (no effect if no selection is made)

Perhaps a simple mnemonic:

"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"...

You are feeling very sleepy...

"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"
"Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all"...

I will count backwards from 10 to 1... when I reach 1, you will impulsively recall "Shift-Ctrl-A to ripple all" whenever you desire to insert or delete time across all tracks and move markers...

Seriously, committing keyboard shortcuts to motor-memory is paramount to editing with speed and accuracy. All due repect to GG and others (this is not meant to be a slap), there is a saying in the high-end operators arena: "You can't soar with the eagles when you're ridin' the rodent"...

I would be remiss not to say there are so many things you cannot do with keystokes... but the more you can, the faster and more productive you can be. (IMHO)

Cheers, MPH

There will be improvements in the ripple behavior for Vegas 4.

That is the first reply I have heard from SF regarding ripple for my year long complaint. Just to be serious, YIIIPEEEEEE!

I am dreaming ... SoFo made a statement about VV4.
Gonna check with my Bank Manager about that credit program ...

Now, now, GG (and MartyH) don't take me too much serious. I don't do video for a living (with my talent, I would starve) I only do it for fun. So, I am self-indulgent with my shortcomings.

When I think that, when I finish some of my projects (say a vacation video) and then look back and start to calculate all the time that I spent capturing, editing, mixing, tweaking, choosing (or making) and applying music, rendering, ..., and then, go back re-editing, re-tweaking and re-rendering ... and then ... ... ... I always come to the conclusion that it took me !!3 to 5 hours!! of labour (all of it late at night) for each minute of final work.

If that ain' for fun, then what ?!

Must be a hotter tobic then I though, and there is me thinking it was me.
Just to re-cap

If you select (a region) a clip and then do CTRL+A then press delete ALL the clips on the right come down.

If you place the cursor on the time line and wish to inser there, you need to trim a clip then do COPY (CTRL+C), then CTRL+SHIFT+V and that will add a clip at the cursor and move all clips on all time lines up to accomadate it.

I assumed Ripple would do that just as it says over all clips, but not so, it just works on that line selected, which seems pointless as Insert would do that.

Hi Z,

>>>>>If you select (a region) a clip and then do CTRL+A then press delete ALL the clips on the right come down.<<<<<

More specifically, If you select an event (by double-click on it) and delete (or cut) with ripple-on, just that track will move. If you double-click the event, Ctrl-A, and delete (or cut) with ripple-on, all tracks will move. To also move markers and regions, use Shift-Ctrl-A (select none).

CTRL+SHIFT+V should ripple across tracks

>>>I assumed Ripple would do that just as it says over all clips, but not so, it just works on that line selected, which seems pointless as Insert would do that.<<<<

Vegas provides the *choice* of ripple on selected tracks or all tracks: CTRL+V and CTRL+SHIFT+V, respectively... and of course, the many other ways.

Don't forget you may want to insert and *not* ripple (overwrite), so ripple can also be disabled.
