WOW.... I have one of these already... and can highly recommend it. Hmmm... do I have enough space in my new office for two of them????

Just picked one up, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how I did without it for so long. Great monitor, with gobs and gobs of screen space!

Just make sure your graphics card is reasonably current and supports the 1920x1200 mode first, and a graphics card with a DVI port is best.

Thanks a million, John -- just ordered mine now using that code... appreciate it very much! and boomhower for letting us know about it..

I'd been wanting a widescreen since I saw an apple computer one a couple years ago, but at $2K-$5K it was a bit pricey, compared to just having a few 21" lcds side by side...

So, I just bought it... hadn't planned on it, but it'll make a big difference.. I use a matrox parhelia, will be interesting to see if it works, the resolution should be ok... that would rock, to have the 24" dell plus my 21" lcds, for 3 monitors with a 24" in the middle .. or I might need to just add a couple pci cards to drive the side monitors..

anyways, THANKS guys - it'll make a huge difference in workflow.

I think about using Sony Vegas with it -- it'll be So much easier to use, stretching the timeline across the one wide monitor, vs two or three ...

great forum! let me know if I can return the favor..

You might try running the "HDTV overlay" to another input on the monitor, you will be surprised at the quality, that is if you have the APVe model.

So anyone else who has this monitor as I do, I'm wondering if you might be able to clue me in. While I love it it seems that I have a problem with gradients. The easiest way to for me to see the problem is if I open the color palette in Photoshop, instead of it going smoothly from light to dark there are bands at varying degrees.

Anyway one else see this or know what I'm talking about? Never had it with a CRT and its a bit annoying. Yes my settings are at the highest color quality (32 bit) but it almost looks as though its set at 16 bit.

the pc magazine editor's choice review mentioned this too; they said the best way to manage it is with video card settings; likely a higher-powered video card would help?

I'm thinking of getting one of the higher end nvidia chipset ones, whatever's newest...?

It would be great if Sony could come out with competitive pricing for this type of monitor: 24" widescreen for less than $800...

hmm but appears there's user complaints, I'll check, return it if needed, see:

MUTTLEY and ken:
Some LCD panels only have 6-bit color depth (instead of 8), which will produce banding on color gradients.
Perhaps the Dell LCD is one of these panels?

2- I'm not sure what the panel actually is. Some people say it's 6 bit, others 8 bit.

>>>Combinable $60 off $500 coupon
Code: ?S8Z?$8RH8DCWX Exp 10/29 6am CT<<<

Can't get this one to work. All I get is a message that the coupon is entered but "require additional information or do not meet eligibility requirement"

>>>35% off Dell 2001FP, 2405FP and 1704FPT LCD monitors Coupon Code: 8KRQ6BZ9BRCKBB Exp 10/29 6am CT<<<

Works great. Nice to see that price drop, except it is not $500.00 off it is $419.65 off.

So I am still confused as to what coupons codes really work to get the $560.00 off.

EDIT - ok, so maybe the comment about Combinable $60 off $500 coupon was mistyped - the 35% off cupon brings it down to the price in the first post - 779.35, but it is not $500.00 off. The $60.00 off coupon says $60 off S&P purchase of $500 - $1,000 and the fine print says Offer excludes all configurable software and peripheral products. In which case the monitor is a peripheral product. So there isn't not any $500.00 off plus another $60.00 off this monitor....or am I just missing something.

Edit #2 - ok so I tried another monitor - the 20 inch one - and for whatever reason the $60.00 off coupon worked for this one. Weird.

Edit #3 - Anyone gotten the $560.00 off yet?

It's funny, a lot of Mac users are buying these things as they're much cheaper and an inch larger than the 23" Apple Cinema display.
MUTTLEY wrote on 10/29/2005, 12:21 PM
I have a fairly new GeForce 6800GT with 256 MB, if that doesn't prevent banding in gradients I don't know what will. What I do know is it makes graphic work in PS pretty difficult, but makes me more grateful I have an external monitor for color correction in Vegas or I'd be screwed.

I will say that though I love the size if this is an innate problem with the monitor and not some setting I can tweak I'd be hesitant to recommend it.

filmy,
Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner before the deal ended.

>>>35% off Dell 2001FP, 2405FP and 1704FPT LCD monitors Coupon Code: 8KRQ6BZ9BRCKBB Exp 10/29 6am CT<<<
That means 35% off of the regular price. That means in the case of the 24" monitor - $419.65 off bringing the proce down to $779.35.

>>>Combinable $60 off $500 coupon
Code: ?S8Z?$8RH8DCWX Exp 10/29 6am CT<<<

"Combinable means that the coupon can be combined with another offer or coupon" You should have been able to get another $60 off because you spent over $500 bringing the price to $719.35". The only caveat with that coupon was that it applied to items between $500 and $1000 so if you didn't get it it was because they applied it to the before sale price of $1199. Worth a shot though.

>>>"Combinable means that the coupon can be combined with another offer or coupon"<<<

I know what "combinable" means. My question was aimed at the typing of it - "Combinable $60 off $500 coupon" which sounded like there was a $500.00 off coupon and you could combine the $60.00 off coupon with it thusly maike for $560.00 off the price. I was asking where the "$500 coupon" was. Couldn't find it 'cause it didn;t exist. :)

Anyhow - thanks for the info. By the way I see WalMart has a 51 inch HDTV set/monitor for $800.00 and something. It is under $900.00 anyway. Prices are just dropping all over the place. On the other hand I was told yesterday by a contactor that building costs have skyrocketed. Gotta have a place to put all the new affordable toys that are out there now.

Thats a very good deal. However I have been looking into buying an Apple Cinema Display 23 inch HD for under $700 from ebay. Apple has made a new monitor which just has a different casing they are selling for alot more. If you are not concerned with the casing you can get a better deal by going with the older Apple Cinema display monitor.
Coursedesign wrote on 10/30/2005, 7:53 AM
Be careful with Apple's 23" Cinema Display. I think a huge number of those had a problem with the display [image] going pink within a few months, and Apple refusing to fix it, which led to a well deserved massive class action lawsuit against them.

Reviews have also been clear that the Dell is a better monitor.

On top of that, the Dell has the HDTV input [and more].

Wasn't that a projection TV, not a flat panel?

I have one of these monitors (I paid $950 about 3 months ago) that I use for an HDTV as well as an editing monitor. Very nice HDTV picture. If you can get one at these prices do so.

Sorry filmy,

That IS the lingo however. $5 off $50 means if you spend $50 you can take $5 off. I guess I shouldn't assume that those who don't frequent the bargain sites all the time (as I do) know all the lingo.
I wasn't sure what you were confused about, but now I know. Next time I will be more clear when I post a bargain.

Got my monitor and Wee! it rocks... I need to buy another pc video card (matrox 450 pci) so that I can mix monitor resolutions, eg 2 flat panel 21" LCDs plus this one, though.. so I ordered one from newegg..

so far this monitor is terrific, no noise/pixel burnouts... I love this Dell monitor..

I may just end up getting 2 more... for 3 x 24" wide .. think of the Vegas timeline on 3 24" monitors ... muhaha the power!

great monitor, and thanks a bunch to you folks for suggesting it, glad I bought it.. I'd been holding out for a widescreen til now, that was "too good to pass up" ... it'll significantly help productivity + workflow... plus I can watch widescreen movies now... :p

Hey Sony! If you folks can give me a 24" widescreen monitor like Dell did, for under $800, I'll likely buy two of 'em.

How much Are comparable sony widescreens by the way?

Oh checking, gee the Sony 23" is a whopping $1800 !

Smaller monitor and well over twice the price... gee I don't think so.

Hmm lessee, Sony 23" for $1800, or Dell 24" for $780 .. which is a better deal? lol. Get competitive...

I purchased the Sony 23" LCD HDTV (1366 resolution) and applied the MY-HD card file I had recorded of the NCAA finals on CBS and I could not tell the difference between my Sony 34" HDTV and the new monitor.
The sucker was "dead nuts sharp". I can't explain it but I saved almost $1000.00.

It worked out great.... now I have the 24" dell widescreen in the middle, and two 19 (or 21"?) LCDs, one on either side. This is a killer setup.. should help significantly w/Vegas editing, since can put the timeline on main widescreen ...

the matrox g450 PCI (99 at newegg.com, spent 27 for overnight shipping) along with my parhelia works great... dell on the parhelia, other 2 LCDs on the G450. Will cap a photo/upload sometime soon.

Highly recommended - and thanks again all .. great forum!
