DeLogo and Logoaway inside Vegas

Information: The VirtualDub plug-ins DeLogo and Logoaway can be used in Vegas 6 via Wax. I did it this way.

1. In the preference settings for Wax I unchecked “Use dummy host media in Wax plugin for Vegas/Editstudio”.
2. I specified Best(Full) quality preview in Vegas.
3. I specified Best quality (Full) preview in Wax.

The problem is that the logos / timestamps come back when the preview quality is reduced to Best (Auto) in Vegas. But maybe one can render to a new trace, before changing / reducing the preview quality.

Reduced to Auto from Full? Is it possible that the logos / timestamps are actually still there in Full preview mode but you simply don't see them because your preview window is only showing the central half of the frame? Aside from that, i can't think of any reason why they would come back just from changing the preview mode.

I have used DeLogo inside of Vegas for several years, and never had a problem with the preview. However, I haven't tried it in Vegas 6 (only in Vegas 5), so perhaps something is different.

No, I can se the full frame in the Best (Full) preview mode. So the time stamps I want to remove, are actually gone.

I had the same problem in Pure Motion Edit Studio 5. It was I guy on the Pure Motion Forum that said I had to use the Full preview setting in both Wax and Edit Studio. Therefore I tested in Vegas, and it worked! Try for yourselves in draft mode (Wax) and something else than Best (Full) in Vegas.

John. I have not tested DeLogo or Logoaway in Vegas 5 yet. Bet I realized when I reopened my Vegas project that Wax / VirtualDub does not remember my settings…

Yeah, I forgot about that. You have to go back to each event and "re-enable" the DeLogo filter. My "workaround" was simply to never close the project until I was finished completely. Of course, if I had to go back, it was a bummer. Fortunately, most of the projects on which I've used this are either to remove the date/time from camcorder footage clients give me, or to remove the network "bug" when I'm archiving TV shows I've watched. Both of those involve projects that I set up, render, and delete from my hard drive all in one session.

When we are discussing this matter: My main purpose is to remove (white) time stamps before stabilizing my clips – outside of Vegas, unfortunately.

I have found that the Repair mode is best. So I have created a picture (pixel aspect ratio equal to 1 ) with pure RED where the time stamp is. Under Repair parameters I have found that Depth = 2, Power = 4, and checking for interlaces are good settings for my purpose. My videos are standard dv-avi (pal) and therefore interlaced.

My first problem is: which setting should I use for Pixel- aspect? 1.000 or the pixel aspect ratio reported by Vegas and VirtualDub, or the pixel aspect ratio reported by Adobe Premiere Elements and Avid Liquid?

My second problem is: How do you use DeLogo and which settings would you recommend in my situation?

Best regards,
Joran

Assuming you're in NTSC land, if you make your image 655x480 then use a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0. If you make it 720x480 then use 0.9091.

I live in PAL land (Norway), but I understand the principal part of your recommendations. By the way, have you tested the “best” and “draft” quality preview settings in both Wax and Vegas?

Edited: It’s impossible to set the exact pixel aspect ratio in DeLogo, as far as I can see, using the slider.

Thank you!

Kelly answered your first question.

How do you use DeLogo and which settings would you recommend in my situation?

I capture the frame using the capture in DeLogo, within VirtualDub. I paint the logo with pure red. Hint: Make sure you follow the doc recommendation of making the the red mask really LARGE. There is usually a faint ghost, especially to the right of the logo, and if you don't paint that out as well, the logo will still appear to have partially survived.

I then load the mask into DeLogo using the Repair option (same as you) and use the default settings. If you use DeLogo inside of VirtualDub, you can use the "Show Preview" option to play around with the defaults. I just did this a few weeks ago and was not able to improve on the results, so I just went back to the defaults.

I'm not sure this is what you are asking. DeLogo works very sell for what it is, but it simply blends pixels from adjacent areas, and "fuzzes" them together. It makes no attempt to be predictive or intelligent, or to reconstruct the pixels (e.g., if there is a vertical line through the logo, it makes no attempt to match it up).
