Hi Chris,

We do have to set the buffer slider up to .81 to get playback without
any skips on most projects, but we are certainly not using the
fastest IDE drives by any means. So far we get perfect playback at
this setting on projects with as many as 30+ tracks.

BUT, we don't do much recording using VEGAS (lots of mixing though
... Vegas is a big hit with our clients in that regard!), so our
setup is not a fair representation of either its capabilities or its
limitations. (however, see a possible kludge/workaround for your
problem below)

We have three hard drives in the system: one for the OS, one for
audio record/playback only, and a drive "docking module" setup for
archiving purposes.

Yes, we do have some problems with the Vegas/MOTU 2408 combination
and recording, and I have not been able to pin point whether it is a
limitation of our system, or a driver problem with the PCI 324. Since
Cubase works well on our system for recording, I suspect that SF
still has some issues to hammer out with MOTU on their drivers.

Again, we are perhaps in an unusual situation whereby we don't really
rely on Vegas for recording and use it almost exclusively for mixing.

I would like to get the recording issues hammered out though.

One thing that I have noticed that seems to help the stuttering
issue, at least in our case:

On our system it helps to record the files using Vegas to a TEMP
directory, close Vegas and delete everything but the .wav files in
TEMP and move them to a new directory, then open a new instance of
Vegas and import the files into the new project, setting up any new
bus settings at this point.

In almost every case we have used this methodology (at least when
recording 16 bit files), the dogging down of the hard drive seems to
have ceased during playback and we can go about our business with no
skipping. I have no idea why this is the case and your mileage may
vary, but it may be worth a try.

We like the program so much for the way we work (it is has paid for
itself in record time)that we are willing to put up with some first
version blues and have been able to find work arounds for all our
issues so far ... even if it means recording off the DA-88's using
Cubase and transfering the resultant files into Vegas ... I know,
that is certainly neither desirable, nor feasible for most, but it
works for us.
