Deshaker & HD or other image stabilization options

I've got some handheld HD shots that I would like to smooth out just a little. It's not too bad but I would prefer to make it a little better. What intermediate file type should I use if I want to use Deshaker and Virtual Dub? I'm starting with AVCHD from an HD100.

Thanks for any suggestions.

VirtualDub works with avi format (unless I'm out of date!). I always convert my clips to Cineform DIs (which is fine in DeShaker) and I observe that NEO HD (and NEO Scene) accepts AVCHD input. There are other packages which are cheaper, but I'm not familiar with them.

I use deshaker from the timeline (plug in) when I'm editing M2T HD files and that works fine. I've also used it on SD files of various origins and never had to convert anything before hand.

maybe I'm out of date but how do you use it as a plugin?

I'm using vegas 8 btw,

from what i've seen, and played with, mercalli (pro-dad) plug in is pretty damn good.....

I use it on AVCHD clips as long as your project settings are standard avi formats it renders back to the timeline and you output to whatever you require

how do you use it as a plugin?
When you install,it places a folder in your c drive
Click on your clip, run tools/scripts direct the script to this folder and it’s the deshaker.js

not only is it a plug in, it's remarkably easy to use. At first glance the deshaker program and side kick Virtual Dub (or is it the other way around) seemed very intimidating. Every time I use is, which is not often, I fear I may have forgot the magic in making it work..."let's see, what do I run first, virtual dub or deshaker?" But the reality is I get it right the first time each time I have to install and use it. Go figure. Have not tried it on V8 yet.

ok, i think i misunderstood. when you say you use it as a plugin you mean within virtual dub and NOT in vegas?

If you check some of the very old threads you will find the script and how to change the working drive and logs to get it to run properly in 8.0c as a pluggin.

After some searches here and in google I managed to come up with an exe that installs everything and has instructions on installing a .js file into the scripts folder. After this I was able to apply deshaker by using the tools, scripts dialog.

My questions continue. After the deshaking process completed I expected to see another track with the processed video appear. Instead only one clip remained but when I played it back it was clearly processed and much of the shaking had been smoothed out. At least I think that was the case but it was playing at 4-8 fps.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of codec things were happening but I'm suspecting that what ever file type the processed clip was converted to didn't match the project settings. Is there anything I can do to make processed video playback at a better rate?

To test the video I rendered it out to a mp4. It was a seriously shakey shot taken while running along side a great dane in the park. The rendered file was much smoother than the original clip but there were some issues with some of the frames. I'm thinking this was just because the clip I chose was pretty turbulent.

I'm really happy I got this working. It's something I've wanted for a long time. I'm much more fond of handheld camera work for most of the work that I do.

Thanks

I hear what you are saying wm b I shot some high end bike clips all indoors, dark back sharp lighting, high polish chrome etc locked down

And the footage had no human element..very surgical…went back with a fig-rig got the same look but more honest. Like I wasn’t trying to sell you something, got that clean high end look but with a human element

"At least I think that was the case but it was playing at 4-8 fps."

Load it into Dynamic preview ram. Mark your in/out points with the markers then press SHIFT B

This will load the highlighted area into preview ram for smooth playback. (If the highlighted area only loads part way then your preview ram is not set high enough.
