Device offline message

I am trying to send my completed project to a DV tape. I choose Print Video to DV Tape and I get a message that 80% of my project needs to be rendered. I go through the settings and it starts to render. When it gets about 95% done I get a message that "Your device is offline. Please reconnect it now and click okay." I don't know what it thinks is offline. I've tried this 3 times and it always stops at the same place. Any ideas, please?

In order to print to DV tape, you must have a DV device attached to your IEEE 1394 OHCI compliant device. If Vegas does not see this device (usually your DV camera, you will get that message.

I've seen the message you refer to in the past, and normally all it takes is to shut off the camera and turn it back on.

I do have my DV recording deck plugged in to my firewire card. I tried turning it off and on but the message is still displayed.

You will need to manually engage the record mechanism when using certain DV decks with Vegas print. Video Capture should provide full control over the DV deck when doing capture/print.

I have tried manually starting the record on the DV deck but it still doesn't work. Why when I print to tape do I have to render the clip again anyway. I already rendered the clip. It will render 90% of it and then say device is offline. I've tried different clips and they all get the message about the same area. I've tried turning off and on my dv recording deck but it still won't finish rendering when I try printing to DV tape. Any other suggestions?

One problem you may have is your camera may not want to allow you to take manual control without also losing the connection. Here's a work around I discovered which at least works for my Canon ZR45 and my PC running XP.

As a first step render your project with your selected template. Select video for Windows AVI and the NTSC or PAL Template. This is the time intensive part. Once completed close down Vegas Video and open the included Capature Utility. If you have not yet used it you should find it in the Vegas 30 folder. You may wish to make a shortcut so it appears on your desktop.

Locate the file you just rendering by clicking on file from within the capature utility. It should open in a window. Now plug in your camera to it's power supply and also plug in the firewire cable between your camera and computer. The capature utility may say connect a device or give some other message. Even if not if the cue device, preview in device or record to device buttons are grayed out just remove and re insert the firewire cable from the camera. That should be all that is necessary. Once the capature software "sees" your camera the control buttons will no longer be grayed out. Click on print to tape, follow the on screen promps and after a brief pause you should see the video in your camera's viewfinder/LCD screen and any monitor you connect to the camera as the transfer is being made. Since the file is already now fully prerendered the only time needed for the transfer is the actual time of the video you are transfering.

The only file I find close to what you mention is in the Extras folder on the CD. There is a folder that contains a Video Capture fix for Sony Vaio. Is that what you are saying to use? When I try to install that EXE file it says the Sony driver isn't found. I'm getting no where fast with this problem.

You can access the Video Capture utility included with Vegas 3.0 by going to File--->Capture Video within Vegas. Otherwise, you can access the program by going to your Vegas program directory (default is C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Vegas 3.0), and double-clicking the vidcap30.exe file.
