Device Unavailable For Capture

For months I have been capturing video from my HV20 via Firewire, editing and producing movies with Platinum 9b on my PC. Suddenly, Vegas tells me the Device (is) Un-available. In playing with the camera settings, I found that Vegas will recognize and load the camera when it is placed in Camera mode instead of Playback mode - it will even show the camera live image on the capture screen. But when the camera is returned to Playback, the device becomes unavailable. The PC recognizes camera connection/disconnection events audibly. I also found that I could capture video with the same connections using Premier Elements.

The only event of significance that happened between my last successful capture and now is that I installed a new wireless mouse. I have since uninstalled it but to no avail.

My only thought now is to re-install Vegas and hope for the best. But I thought I'd ask this forum first. (BTW while reading this forum I noted the recommendation that I should capture using HDVSplit. I will try that next, but am still interested in solving the problem.)

The following is an edit to my original post. I found that HDVSplit had the same problem as Vegas - it would recognize the camcorder only if it was in the Camera mode.

After a few hours fiddling with the camera settings and in the process connecting and disconnecting the camera, I was delighted to find that the problem has disappeared. Both Vegas and HDVSplit recognize the camera in Play mode.

I'm sorry for any distraction I caused...Bob

Do you know what it was Bob? Could it have been SD vs HD mode on the camera?

This might help. Don't reinstall VMS until you check Properties and see if 'Capture from external source' (or similar) has been unticked (or ticked) along the way.

Cheers.
