Did I goof up....How to get home movie off DVD?

My son's wedding was filmed in Hi8. I asked the person who did it to put it on a DVD as I don't have a Hi8 camera anymore. I figured it would be no problem to get it into the computer and edit it. Admittedly, I have not tried to do this before. Did I goof up here? I don't see an option to import into Movie Studio.

I have a capture card (Hauppauge PVR-250) so if push-comes-to-shove, I can hook up the DVD player and capture that way.

Any help, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

MPEG is a hard format to edit with because it's so compressed. Search this forum and the Vegas Video forum with a keyword of VOB and you'll find lots of discussions on how to do this.

Last time I needed to do this I took the easy way out and re-captured the output from my DVD player.

DOH! Searched for VOB and was "slapped up side the head" with VirtualDub. Downloaded the VirtualDubMod and am busily converting to AVI.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Easiest way is to get the videographer to make you a data dvd with the raw files on it. Best quality that way, too.

Or, of course, borrow, rent or buy a Sony digital8. All but the lowest end model will play Hi8 (and regular 8mm) tapes, and you can port them right into the computer as DV-AVIs through a firewire connector.
