Differing aspect ratios for Picture in Picture

DesktopAdonis wrote on 7/3/2025, 10:41 PM

Currently running Vegas Pro 22. I was asked to help with mapping video for a stage which requires I chop up some animations. However, when I do this the map is at 1920 x 1080 Which is fairly important to have for mapping for the projectors. However I have to make the animations in small panels. Avg ration is 468x1080. However when I use picture in picture It selects the smaller panel with massive black bars that will overwrite the panels next to it. Is there some way to force picture in picture to select only the smaller aspect ratio so I can lego the panels together?https://i.imgur.com/0zzAaNy.png https://i.imgur.com/Q7K9LVH.png

@DesktopAdonis You can load pictures on here, this is your picture.

However when I use picture in picture It selects the smaller panel with massive black bars that will overwrite the panels next to it.

You're going to have to explain that a bit better because the PinP 'black bars' seen on screen don't overwrite the panel next to it..? The event on the upper track will 'overwrite' the event below but only the image, not the back bars

Howdy. Professional video mapper here... Typically, you want 1920x1200, it's very rare to find a projector with a 1920x1080 native resolution, most are 16:10 aspect ratio.

As for your question, I'd suggest using track motion vs. picture in picture. Yes, this means everything has to be on its own track, but you won't have to deal with the issues you mention. That, or you can mask out the black bars using the mask feature found in event pan/crop or using the bezier mask effect.

However, for mapping work, I typically just use Resolume Arena. You can do all of that in real time without needing to render anything, along with much better mesh warping capabilities, multiple projector edge blending, etc.
