Direct Stream Copying and Sequencing?

Dear Vegas Friends,

Two question that have been pressing me for quite sometime. In VirtualDub, there's a function called "Direct Stream Copying". It allows me to re-render a DV file, or parts of a DV file, without actually re-rendering it. (I cant think of a better way to explain it) Nevertheless, it saves copious amounts of time.

Does Vegas 5 have something like this?

Also, I noticed that "sequencing JPEGs" is a function in Vegas. It allows me to import a bunch of JPEGs so that they playback as a raipd succession of JPEGs.

How can I get this same effect with video files, WITHOUT havng to cut each and every video segment into .2 sec (or whatever)?

Yes, Vegas does direct stream copying of DV and uncompressed AVI files as long as there haven't been any changes such as filters, effects, compositing, crossfades, titles, etc. If absolutely nothing has been change except for cuts and trimming, Vegas will make a bit-for-bit copy of the video rather than rendering it.

Hmmm. I suppose some scripts could be created, but you would have to specify what you wanted to do. What 0.2 section of the video do you want to use? How would you tell Vegas what part to use?

The direct stream copy in VirtualDub is often faster, especially if you increase the "AVI Output Bufferring" and also the "Stream Data Pipelining" by two "clicks." Also, you will double the speed by doing the stream copy to a different physical disk.

As Kelly pointed out, Vegas does the same thing if you don't alter the files.

I too am a little puzzled by what you are trying to do with the series of JPEGs, but if you want a "jerky" effect that looks like a series of stills, right-click on the event and change the "Undersample Rate" to 0.5 (or some other lower value).

I guess I was think about sequencing the first pice of several videos, without having to truncate each and every one of them. Not too practical of an idea, now that I think about it...

And yes, VDub is MUCH faster with that function.
