Disable image stretching

shersh wrote on 12/2/2017, 9:33 PM

I have just completed a video with ~70 added pictures, I had to set their sizes to the source size manually using Pan/Crop and it was nightmare. Sometimes it did not even let me set the original picture size if the picture is small.

I couldn't find any way to disable image stretching. I'm going to make a new video with 100+ pictures and the perspective of setting the sizes of every picture is terrifying me. Please advise.

For one thing, under Options|Preferences|Editing, make sure that the last item "Automatically crop still images added to timeline" is not checked. If checked it will fill the screen.

It's not checked...

Therefore I create a new track with the pictures and track motion. I take the image height of the respective picture, e.g. from project media and enter it as height in track motion. The property of the keyframes I put on hold.

It would be nice that stretching the images could be switched off.

Thanks, but every my picture has its own size. So this doesn't help me much.

How different are the pictures? Are ALL 100 different to each other?

Yes, all of them are different.

Grazie wrote on 12/3/2017, 5:11 AM

Hmmm.... You need to have a new creative approach. Or, sub it to an intern. Can you float here some of the differences? BTW where will they appear in project?

Did you accidentally set Maintain Aspect Ratio to No?

I assumed that the pictures are smaller than the project size and should be taken over 1: 1 like e.g. a logo. I am not aware of any setting options for this.
The time spent using the method described above may be a minute per image, but it adds up naturally and it could go automatically.

Is it only pictures that are smaller than project resolution that you are having problems with?

shersh wrote on 12/3/2017, 3:44 PM

Thank you all for trying to help, I don't want to sound rude, but I'm looking for simple solution like an option or script. I'm not going to change my approach or continue to manually set sizes of hundreds of pictures in my future projects, it's ridiculous. I would rather change video editor, since it seems that Vegas misses such basic functionality.

set wrote on 12/3/2017, 5:03 PM

Here's my workflow comparison of still images for slideshows.

I never had the issue of 'image stretching' by default since the beginning of using Vegas (even can't find any option for that - but correct me if I'm wrong).

I just drag and drop some images of mine to the timeline, and there I have it.

To readjust the images especially for portrait images, I need to go to 'Event Pan & Crop', and do the adjustment.

The inability to import small items at natural pixel size is a pain when doing animation (the cartoon kind). Perhaps one needs to look at other specialised animation programmes designed specifically for this purpose.

Former user wrote on 12/3/2017, 6:07 PM

That is the way Vegas works. It makes the image fit the project frame on at least one axis.

set wrote on 12/3/2017, 6:18 PM

Ah, ok - so what you mean is 'any picture imported is scaled up to fill the entire project size?'

Currently that's the way it works...

Depends on how you will do with each images, but if I need to show each part of images one by one (in case the motion of each image is not complex), I will arrange them in Photoshop, save each layer one by one as PNG with all similar size (yes, you have a lot of empty part), and then stack those images.

But again, this depends on how you will do the motion, if complex animation such as cartoon human character, that's currently challenging to do in Vegas Pro.

Therefore Vegasaur has the 1-Click-Script "Original Size". There may also be free scipts.

Although it's paid and seems uses some trick to resize the big stretched image back to original size (image loses in quality), it's the best solution so far. Thank you!

Eh?? So, do you want the images to stay small at their original size? Is that it?

My bad then. Glad it's clear now.

Grazie wrote on 12/4/2017, 3:01 AM

I'm also "glad" I asked the question! Well, it still doesn't help you.

As a highly developed NLE Vegas does a lot to assist us to get to what we want. And yes there are scripts that assist.

Questions for you: If Vegas did keep the tiny Size you wanted, just where would Vegas display it? In the middle? Top or bottom of the Screen? Where? My thought would be that it would be in the right in the Middle. But then, this wouldn't be good enough for you/me/us - would it? Soooooo . . . we would then need to adjust to place the tiny piccie just where we wanted. This could get messy and time consuming very quickly!

Yes, but the tiny piccies may be body of face parts that you need to place accurately anyway when animating. No problem it's part of the art. But having to reduce every 'piccie' down to its true size before accurately placing them is a pain.
