Disaster. help

Ok. Now its serious.

Since the second bluescreen of death in Win 2k, while using the Tascam US-122, Vegas will no longer even play.

It launches, and will even load a project, but when I hit the play button a message says:

"An error occurred while starting playback. Error 0x8004E0C1. [message missing}"

and nothing happens. Any Sony guys out there know what the heck is going on? I even downloaded and installed 4.0e and the latest US-122 driver from Tascam and got the same results.

Help.

What is your full set up.

FIXED THE BEAST!

Yanked out all the US-122 driver files, re-set vegas to work with the 828, and I'm smooth as frog fur once again.

Something dreadfully similar happened on a laptop running XP last summer when I tried the M-Audio Oxygen (or amybe it was the Ozone--the one with with MIDI). Sucker crashed and I burned in the middle of a presentation after running fine thru three rehearsals.

The 828's a workhorse, and gives me 6 outs for monitoring surround mixes, but it would sure be nice to have a portable audio interface to complement the laptop for field work.

Oh well. Thanks for the reply, Sari.

Sounds like an asio issue. Did you try the wdm drivers?

Steve:

What WDM drivers? I used the (asio) drivers that came with the 122. Were there others I didn't see? Or do WDM drivers come from somewhere else?

I'd be more than happy to test anything you suggest.

Set vegas to windows classic wave driver in OPTIONS=> PREFERENCES=>
AUDIO TAB=>AUDIO DEVICE TYPE=>WINDOWS CLASSIC WAVE DRIVER
hope this helps, while the asio driver offers more versatility, for some hardware the classic driver is more stable.

Steve:

Thanks, I'll try it. I have a 1.7 Hz pentium running Wim 2K. Lots of RAM and Disk. It's not the absolute newest, but still a pretty buffed out box. Should this matter regarding drivers?

Asio within vegas is still 1st generation. Asio within the us-122 is also 1st generation. Given another year or so... start with the classic drivers. Your computer is plenty fast, I'm using the us-122 with a 266 laptop. I'm limitted to 10 tracks or so but I find this adequate for my portable needs.

Thanks for the informed assistance---but How do I use the Classic drivers? As soon as I connect the 122, Windows wants to install the 122 USB drivers.

I told Win not to install them, but when I go into the preferences, select audio device, I see only the classic drivers and the MOTU 828 drivers. Selecting either does not cause Vegas to play through the 122.

What Am I missing here?

Let windows install everything it wants. When you open vegas, go to OPTIONS=>PREFERENCES=>AUDIO=>WINDOWS CLASSIC DRIVER
This should allow the 122 to work with your system.
If this doesn't work, try uninstalling reinstalling the us 122 drivers.

Steve:

Did all you suggested and so far (knock, knock) it's working.

Thank you.

I am surprised, though. ASIO's been around for at least 5 years, if not more. Why is it so unstable?

I'm new here and I was browsing. Maybe this reply is a little late,, But I had the exact problem with Acid pro 4.0. I'm sure it's the same engine as vegas..I use the us 122 ,,us 224 and the 428. I was getting the blue screen of death for months. Now everything is working great and I haven't had a crash in a long time. Here is what solved my problem,,,
If you are using many apps( music software) on your computer only One of them can be designated as using tascams asio driver ,, the other apps have to use tascams wdm drivers. Some apps are flexible in sharing thier drivers others aren't.. Acid pro 4.0 and I'm sure vegas aren't. Also you have to disable your windows sound card in order for tascams drivers to take full control of the audio on your computer. I also had to do some minor tweeks with the latency settings in the asio control panel and in Acid. I 'm happily using the asio drivers with acid now ,,, no problems....everything is stable,, Ahh-- the complex world of computer recording ,,it's well worth it..............

>>Acid pro 4.0 and I'm sure vegas aren't
Nope. We are very good citizens. You can tell ACID/Vegas to release the ports so they can be shared by other apps. Either read the manual or check out the general prefs page help file as to how to do this.

Thanks for taking an intrest in my post,, I'm aware of closing the audio and midi ports in acid through the options -preferences,, Is this what your talking about? I have discussed this issue with tascam and acid tech support in the past.Tascam told me to select only one app with asio drivers if you are using multiple apps on a single computer. Also they told me that sometimes for some strange reason certain apps work better if they take full control of the drivers. Through exstensive testing,, This advice fixed the problem I was having. Sony tech support tried to help me but nothing came out of our discussions. It was left that I was going to do some testing with Acid and tascam and when I got some results I would contact them.
Through my testing I found that Acid Likes full control of the asio drivers. If I may add that there are no problems if the wdm drivers are selected. The results were obvious. Naturally, my statements pertain to me and my computer, if this can help someone,,,great.
I use Acid along with my tascam Asio drivers everyday now,, no problems ,,no crashes. Acid pro 4.0 is my favorite app. I'm also testing the vegas demo,, it is great as well. I'm using the asio drivers with vegas and I don't have any conflicts.......I'm also thinking of getting rid of my other apps and just use Acid along with vegas........
