Disgusting comb effect

I've been using my Sony HDR TG1 camera successfully for 6 months now. But the latest holiday footage I shot had a nasty comb effect around the edge on certain shots. I put the raw footage through Neo Scene for easy editing but the combing didn't show up until I started to render. As far as I know, I haven't changed any cam settings. Anyone shed some light on what I've done wrong and the remedy please?

You are seeing the effects of interlacing, which is perfectly normal. Computer monitors are progressive displays and don't handle interlaced video properly. The interlacing will disappear when you view it on a television or if you play the file on a computer using software which compensates for the interlacing. More information is available here:

John, my camera records 1080i. In Vegas Pro, there are options such as upper field, lower field, blend field, interpolate fields, none etc. How do I make a decision as to what settings to use? Is it a matter of what turns out the best, or is there a set of settings that will guarantee good quality output?

Your problem could well be that you have not specified a De-interlace Method in your Vegas project settings. This will only matter if you're scaling you video. Still it doesn't do any harm if you're not. Try setting it to Blend.
