Unless you modify the internal default, the display time for still images is 5 seconds. Make sure auto crossfade is active (options menu, or "x"). Place your stills on one of the video tracks, then drag the right edge of each image into the next image by your desired crossfade time.

My experience with using SB with a large number of digital images is that it misses the mark with respect to ease-of-use. You can change the default transition length and the default image display time (from 5 seconds to something else), but you still have to manually place your images on the timeline and drag each successive one to the left in order to get the crossfade. For a few images this is not a problem. For dozens, or tens of dozens, it is virtually unusable. To change th defaults, hold the shift key down while clicking on the "Options => Preferences" menu pick and you'll get a new tab labeled "Internal". Filter on "still" and you can change your default still length. Default is 50,000,000 ms. Filter on "transition" and you can change the "Default Transition Size" value to whatever you want. You can also select all the images then ctrl-drag the end of the last one and all of them will be lengthened by the same amount.

I think this is what you want (see my answer). It's not perfect since it only makes simple crossfades and not fancy ones.

Gosh that's really cool, being able to get "into the program" like that. I was wondering too about how to change the default still length, but your explanation made sense. I have one other question though. Do you know how to get the program to give you a save prompt when you hit the close button, or to autosave every so often?
