Divx AVI Problem

Veggie_Dave wrote on 6/18/2005, 11:33 AM
I've been asked to convert a simple Divx AVI file to MPG2, which I'll then master to a DVD. All nice and simple. However...

There's something wrong with the audio file. Virtualdub gives the following message:
'Virtualdub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file.

... decompress the entire audio stream to an umcompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder'

How can I split the AVI's video and audio properties so that I can re-encode the audio so that I can then re-synch it with the original video when Vegas refuses point blank to open it (even though XP's Movie Maker will open it happily)?

Bizarrelly, the file plays fine in WinAmp and WMP...

You can split the video in VDub by loading your video and selecting Direct Stream Copy under Video and selecting no audio under Audio and then saving your avi file. Then for your audio you can just select save wav from the file menu and then you have your video and audio in separate files. :)

Absolutely superb - cheers :-)

I may not know much but what I do I try to share as much as possible. Glad my advice helped. :)

That worked, but sadly the audio is stretched in some bizarre way. Oddly it's synched perfectly in WMP, but to synch it in Vegas will take at least a full day ... if not longer

Is there any other way of sorting this out? Some magic pixie dust would be helpful ;-)

I think if you install the right codec on your system that Vegas will then be able to open the Divx file. I searched on the web and found a Divx package. It included a player, but I only installed the codec. After that Vegas would open the avi files it didn't recognise before.

May make this process much simpler if it works for you.

I think I'm going to give up. No matter what I use, I get a different length WAV file each time, none of which come even close to synching up...

load the avi (the whole thing) into Besweet and save out a wave file

Did you try installing a DivX codec? This is newer than the one I loaded, but I think it is basically the same: DivX Bundle

As I recall there was some way to install just the codec and not the player.

As I mentioned in my other message, after I did that, I found I could open the DivX avi directly in Vegas. No file splitting, no separate wav file to deal with.

as he has stated - that is not his problem , the problem is that Vegas can not handle VBR mp3 files ..

Ah, sorry, I missed that important detail.
