DMA problems

Cam anyone suggest why I may be having problems with DMA in Windows ME? I can enable DMA on my second hard drive and can capture video without any dropped frames.
If I try to enable DMA on my first hard drive, my system will reboot in Safemode.
Once I begin editing, everything is fine for a while and them I begin experiencing FAT file problems and files in the project become corrupted. If I then disable DMA, the files become accessable again and I am able to continue working on the project.
Sending rendered video back to my camera becomes a problem, because again, once I enable DMA, FAT file problems recur.
Thanks in anticipation of any responses,
Sandra

Sandra...
I had the same problem running WindowsME. If I enabled DMA computer would freeze while booting up. Had to go into safe mode to remove the DMA settings. Finally tried to research the Microsoft Web Site only to find that there were a few articles about WinME locking up with two drives. Finally disabled it and really didn't notice any problems. Recently installed XP-Pro and have been able to enable both drives DMA with no problems

Microsoft has a resolution to this problem here, but it requires contacting Microsoft Support Services. There's also a couple of workarounds, one of which you're already using. You might want to try the other workaround, or contact MS support for the fix.

Thank you Chuck1948 and Jimcho for your responses to this question that has plagued me now for 12 months or more. I have tried all sorts of things and to know that it's associated with ME and is not some sort of hardware conflict is a relief. Windows XP sounds a good option. Thank you again....heaps!!!

Thank you again for your responses to my earlier question re: Windows ME and DMA.

I'd really like to know if, the computer freezing on booting when DMA was enabled, was also accompanied by cross linked files and FAT problems.

I am again losing access to files in my projects and receiving the error message, "The format of the media file conflicts with the way it was previously used in the current project. This could be due to the number and type of streams changing."

I had hoped this problem was an issue with Windows ME and not a hardware conflict.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Sandra
