i've tried using catalyst prepare to output my ex1/mp4 files to dnxhd.mxf (not interested in .mov at all). whilst it writes files they wont inport into vegas, edit, or resolve?
The Sony EX1 shoots in XDCAM-EX. Why would not use the XDCAM format to do the back and forth to Resolve?
If you are talking about the Samsung ex1. Resolve 12 will understand XDCAM and HDCAM formats, both will work well directly in Vegas. Resolve refers to the HDCAM as Sony SStP or something like that.
> "whilst it writes files they wont inport into vegas, edit, or resolve?"
I believe that Avid DHxHD MXF is for an Avid workflow. I don't believe that other NLE's will work with it. Catalyst Prepare supports it for Avid editors.
Vegas Pro does not "support" DNxHD per se'. Vegas Pro supports "QuickTime" and can read anything that QuickTime can contain. It just so happens that QuickTime can contain Avid DNxHD. So Vegas Pro is not looking for DNxHD in an MXF container.
"resolve doesn't accept mp4, nor any compressed audio files." - Vegas does, FFMPEG does, others do. Convert your footage and then move between the apps.
Resolve names HDCAM as MXF OP1A > Sony MPEG4
Resolve also supports Cineform which will work round trip, but does not support the .MXF format.
There are some posts on the BM > resolve forum on converting consumer formats to support resolve. Like converting .MTS and h.265 to round trip formats.
The generational loss is just a cost of business when you shoot on consumer gear.
oh well... i dislike using ,mov of any description, especially when i might end up with a lot of clips to use. i was thinking i'd try dnxhd mxf to see what it was like on the tl - obviously that's now a non-starter ;-(
anyone have any opinion about a variant (?) of xavc to use as an intermediary?
i've been using hd mxf @ 35mb as both inter and round tripping to resolve / ae. most of my work is pretty basic doco type editing, no heavy compositing, though i do have the odd bit of greenscreen every now an then, and am really looking for good tl playback characteristics rather than rendering, at the most reasonable file size.
alternatively would i simply be better off using hd422 mxf @ 50mb (especially for greenscreen work)?
