Does anyone use USB or firewire modules with Vegas?

I am trying to do some multitrack recording on a laptop with Vegas Audio 2.0

I would like to use either a USB or firewire external soundcard to give me at least four input tracks. I bought the M-Audio Quattro but unfortunately I now realize that it only works in 4-channel mode with programs that support ASIO. Since Vegas does not support ASIO I am stuck.

Has anyone done multitrack recording with USB or firewire devices on Vegas? If so, what kind of hardware do you use?

Hello,

I use a Sound Devices USBPre with Vegas (USB), and runs ok.

I was thinking about this same question.
The MOTU firewire devices seem quite attractive
but I've also heard that their windows drivers are not so great.
Still I'd like to try one out.
I haven't seen many other firewire cards.
Are there any?

How are the USB cards working? Much latency?

Hello,

My USBpre have 23ms of latency, but have a input/pc mix for monitoring (You don't need any more for record).

Firewire cards:

MOTU 828 & 896 - the current drivers do not work on the winxp or winME systems I have tried them on, so I can't recommend either.

RME multiface - good reputation. Technically firewire, but uses a custom (and dedicated) pci/pcmcia card with onboard DSP, so you have to buy both the PCI and PCMCIA card if you want to use it with both desktop and portable systems.

Metric Halo - don't know much about these guys.... nice specs for interfaces, with a price to match. Apparently hard to get hold of (or used to be???)

Presonus Firestation - not yet on the market, but looks smart. check out the news item at www.harmonycentral.com (probably a page or two down)

Just checked out the Presonus Firestation at the Presonus website
and what they say is that it will be compatible with many applications
using ASIO drivers.

Of course that means it won't be compatible with Vegas.

Slight correction:
RME Hammerfall DSP (Multiface/Digiface) is NOT firewire based, even though it uses a firewire type connector on the breakout box. It's strictly a PCI/Cardbus system. It works well with Vegas, at least for me.

Currently, PCI/Cardbus solutions (in combination with MME drivers) seem to offer the best performance and reliability. USB is nice for plug and play, but has a low channel count. Firewire doesn't seem to be there yet, this may improve when mLan matures.
