Vegas Pro 8 supports 5D2 video files as well. You maybe need to update your QuicktimePlayer to the latest version.

I can add and edit 5D II video
but the video preview from Vegas 8.1 is poor as it drops frames.

Is there a way to correct that?

This is just due to the heavy CPU power consuming H.264 decoding and the Quicktime wrapper. Same happens when using other editing softwares. You could transcode the Quicktime H.264 to a different video format which does not cosume that much CPU power - such as HDV or Cineform intermediates.
