Doing real time voice overs

Nothing fancy, don't have to be studio quality. Just messing around tried the cheesy sound recorder built into Windows...lots of background noise. Also tried using Audio Cleaning Lab I had laying around, untried, OK and you can apply some filters. So OK, how you guys do it, and oh almost forgot, in real time from VV, (if possible) and if so, what kind of mike, you need a preamp, that kind of thing. TIA. All I'm looking to do it add some simple narration, and mostly looking for CLEAN input on the cheap.
What do I need?

There's about a hundred ways to implement the general idea, but you basically need either a mixer that has a mic preamp, or a preamp only, and there are about a thousand each of those. A few recorders have mic preamps built in, like the Sharp MD702 on the cheap, but this isn't particularly "pro" level -- decent enough maybe. You will still need cables, a decent soundcard (audigy okay, mia good) and -- a mic.

PORTABLE PREAMPS: You might check out the Report Jr. for better mic quality input. For total portability look at SoundProfessionals.com.

Mixers will give you the best quality and long term value for the least $$. Try the Behringer line. Their model 10-something runs on batteries, seems like a great little unit, and sells for $120. For best quality go with Mackie VLZ or later models. For pulling hair out to learn but wild functionality try a Roland VM3100pro, which has pretty damn good effects built in. Lots of issues re: digital versus analog. Best have a crystal ball.
