Don't forget the Bump Map effect...

Bump map can be used to add lighting to badly lit shots. I'm using it right now to add lighting to some church footage that had terrible lighting. It does a really good job.

The first thing you need to do is turn off the bump height when you add it. Change it to spot and start playing with the beginning and end of the light (in the little white box). Also play with the Intensity, Ambience and Focus. I've found that with some footage (especially HDV) you may get banding if you have a dark background (in my case dark blue curtains). In that case I jumped over to After Effects which has better lighting effects. All in all this a great little effect which can work wonders on some shots.

Yes, I agree, very useful. I used this for adding some artificial external sunlight to "in-shadow" detail being cast by Westminster bridge, here in London. I only needed a touch to bring up the detail of a river Thames sand bar-beach.

Many tools in Vegas!

Graze, what "package" were you talking about? i'm not at my station so I can't tell if we're talking about an FX or some script or a commercial offering?

Sorry Jim . . It's the Bump Map Fx - the SONY Bump Map Fx. It's already there - you've bought it already!

I agree Grazie. It can even make decent lit shots that much better.

Same here, in my DV feature I used Bump Map with very diffuse edges around spots, to light actors' faces who were a bit too much in shadow (not for inadequate lighting but due to the limitations of the light sensitivity on the Panny DVX100).

I use it often on text often without the bump if you use the outline with quite a decent thickness the text clear use say a polished metal bmp as your child and premultiply
Then animate the bump light it has a real metallic look

Whereas the bump on the parent channel fx will flatten all channels and use the text as an extrusion so use a threshold appear transition over 5 sec on that
And the fx is quite unusual
