DQ: iMovie Friendly Files

Client wants iMovie friendly files, specifically DV or mpg4. I know how to do mpg4, the DQ regards DV. The files are coming in on a CD from a Sony handycam of some sort. They are having some sort of problem with extracting the files from a disc, and called me.

Let's assume for the moment I have no trouble with the disc and import in fine into Vegas (they told the person on the phone, the file isn't the proper length anymore, so there's no guarantee it will import into Vegas the proper length either). When I import from a camera typically the file is .avi. They do not want .avi files. What other options are there for DV that will still be iMovie friendly. Also I am not fond of working with QT, so would prefer another strategy if possible.

DV-AVI is fully compatible with iMovie afaik.

IMovie also has its own version, which is not compatible with Windows, and cannot be opened or created in Vegas. It uses the .dv extension.

I don't know any other variants other than DVCAM or DVCPRO, which are professional camera formats.

MP4/AVC is easily created in Vegas, and should work fine in iMovie. However, you are converting formats, with some resulting quality issues.

Ask them to tell you specifically what they want, and remind them that you are in a Windows environment.
