Draw Effect in Video

Kaycin wrote on 5/23/2015, 8:24 PM
Hey guys!

I'm trying to add a draw effect in Vegas, and can't quite find the tutorial i'm looking for. I'm trying to recreate what sports announcers do with their telestrator (circling plays, drawing arrows, etc.).

In the video, my goal is to have a still image, where lines are drawn where various objects will be placed in a room. The closest thing I've seen to doing this is to create a Gradient line and have a custom transition with the gradient line made in photoshop.

Is there a program that would work best for this? Is there a way for Vegas to recreate the telestrator effect?

Thanks!

Line on track1, picture to be overlayed on track 2 - you can superimpose an effect like gradient or other for some pizazz in the reveal...

use a travel-wipe for the reveal...

Less elegant, but you could use something like Epic Pen to draw whatever you want over the image on your screen and simply record your screen while doing the drawing using something like Mirilli's Action. This would probably be closer to a true telestrator effect.

Here's a quick tutorial how to create a line using mask tool. (I'm not a tutorial expert, the video tutorial is kind of lame but hope it gets the point.)

For telestrator, as wwaag suggested a screen capture program will be a good method. I also used Corel Video Studio.

Here's a sample @ 1:30, 2:06, 2:15 & 2:45

As far as screen capture I use MSI screen capture. It takes some time to setup but can capture at framerates more than 30fps if needed. I used id to capture games at 60 fps to bust cheats and slow down to 30fps.

It would be good if either Vegas natively or a plug-in added a drawing tool - like the Amiga could do 20 years ago!

There is already a plug-in. Boris RED has the ability to draw on video and it supports a Wacom tablet including pressure for thickness so you can make it look exactly like someone is drawing freehand.

Any line or curve that you can draw with Boris RED can also be quickly animated with just a click and a keyframe.

And very well worth it - maybe the overall best set of tools for VegasPro

OOPS, I had the wrong link to the Corel video sample. It's now to the correct link. Corel Video studio you can select different line textures, the line used in the vid above was a crayon texture.

+1 for Boris Red. Definitely my "Swiss army knife" of tools. What I like about Red is that you get nearly all the BCC and FEC filters plus the full 3D version of Graffiti with a vector graphics engine, all integrated in a true 3D compositor that is a Vegas plugin. The only area where I think it comes up short is its lack of 3D model import. With Boris' purchase of Imagineer Systems (the Mocha Pro tracker), I am eager to see how future versions of Red and BCC integrate with their product.

There is Prodad Heroglyph plugin, that includes an excellent drawing tool / feature,
that can do everything and more you are trying to achieve.

Other technique you can do is to use custom Gradient Wipe pattern, I have done this several times ago. 0,0,0 black color as start to 255,255,255 white color as the end.

Set, this technique sounds interesting, but not sure what the results would be, can you provide an example? Thanks!

Hi Byron,

I forgot where I archived the writing motion, but here's the Floral-growth animation I did in 2010, probably still using Vegas Pro 8 (or 9, I forgot). The technique is similar.
The first part is the final mask ready to use, and for the second part, the in-transition is default Gradient Wipe included template, you can check in Gradient Wipe: Floral Growth, followed by another growth animation again.

Add: finally found it, so it was done also 5 years ago:

Edit: hmmm, I reread OP's question above, seems he also uses Gradient transition to achieve the drawing effect...
