Drive locks during test or burn

Noticed that my Plextor 16/10/40A locks up during a test or burn after writing the 'lead in'. Even if I cancel the test/burn, it will stay in the 'waiting for drive' state forever, and upon ending the program via 'task manager', the drive will stay locked until I do a hard reboot of the machine. I'm running Win2k Adv Server (SP3), all the latest drivers/firmware on all hardware, latest ASPI layer, Dual AMD 1700+ on a Tyan Tiger MPX Mobo.

I wrote to SF concerning this problem, and since then I did some more testing that revealed this problem also occurs in Vegas and Nero as well. CDRWin and Dart Recorder do not have this issue, and burn audio without incident.

Anyone have any ideas?

Let me know if you need more info...

Thanks.

Make sure that you're reporting this issue to the CDArchBeta@sonicfoundry.com address.

Ted,

I did send this problem to that address, and I'm assuming it's being looked in to. I just figured that since it happens in CD Arch, Vegas, and Nero (but not CDRWin or Dart), that maybe something else may be going on not related to the programs themselves.

I have now reinstalled the OS, and am still experiencing the problem, so I'm not sure where to go from here.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome. I may try another burner to see if there's an issue there.

Problem solved!

After a whole lot of experimentation, I removed the jumper that put my Plextor into 'Ultra DMA' mode, and it reverted to standard 'DMA' mode. When I bought this drive a year or so ago, the 'Ultra DMA' jumper trick was experimental on the part of Plextor, and was not officially supported. I had this drive in another system that didn't have an issue with it being in 'Ultra' mode, but apparently my newer system does not handle it correctly for some reason. All is well, and CD Arch burns flawlessly at 16X, and so does Nero. Haven't tested it with Vegas or SF yet, but I am assuming it will work in those apps as well.

You can call off the troops now... :)
