DRM - digital rights

Would like to see this board become vocal and place some pressure on Sony Vegas to keep up with the times on DRM.

There is some nice technology being developed by REAL(coming) , WMV(here) and DIVX(here) on digital rights.

There are many purchasing models but one i like is all VIDS can be downloaded to HDD, and one licence allows all to be played for a period of time.
Could be licence per vid, whatever. The licence is rented of a payment gateway, but you can build your own. May cost $15 per month to limit all sales to a period of viewings.

Gee it would be just SUPER, if Vegas could render whilst picking up the DRM stuff. Would save having to re-render by hand.

I’m not sure what you’re asking for. Are you asking for Sony to include the ability to imbed DRM into rendered content so we can use it to license out work? That would be sweet.

Gee, just like "Mission Impossible" where the DVD goes up in smoke after it is viewed.

Minus the smoke, we already have this....DVDs that die 72 hours after the package is opened. Most major replicators offer these DVDs, but I doubt the technology will last.

Hmmm , no should not be impossible.

The WMV encoder (as an example) is just a stand alone software package that uses DLL's that the code is stored within. Easily available and free.

They will surely create and "interface" so that Sony can licence the use of the interface.
MS may probably also make provision for licencing the whole DLL's too. But this is expensive.

So Sony (who are big on DRM) (Dec2002 http://www.content-wire.com/drm/drm.cfm?ccs=104&cs=2398) - can build another tab in the render options box.
MS will do it because it is how they make money - licencing.

Same with Real and DivX - "sure but pay me"

Also, maybe Sony could use their own system. All they need to do is have a site that supports the licence and so is availalle. Would save on licencing fees.

I was just so happy to find a product that could script long tedious jobs at all hours of the day, and then you have to go back to the drawing board and re render one by one.

So it may only happen if MS, REAL, DIVX release a new codec, but Sony Vegas will not make arrangements for this to happen unless there is some perception of user demand.

So I say, make it a high priority, it is a good time saver achievement.

Options such as this, generally speaking, have been discussed before. For me, this is another one of the "many desired options" that most of us would not use but would have to pay for. Maybe I'm way off base here, but this doesn't seem like something that is obliged to part of an NLE.

Does this mean I need to re-issue disks, operate a 24/7 computer, or
just receive a check once in a while?

DRM - good or bad
