drop in the water / ripple effect.

Hi,

Im looking to produce a video effect with a JPG where ...

the picture looks like a reflection in the water and stone has been throw in the water and there are ripples from an epicentre.

Would appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction. I got a feeling I would need to buy some plug in fx software to do it. If so is there any one who has the software to do it and if i could mail you a JPG to do it to and you send me back an AVI.

cheers
Jc

It can all be done in Vegas.

You need a video of a ripple - with a bit of trial and error you can easily do this yourself. Experiment with light sources/camera positions.

Track 1 - the video of the water ripple.

Track 2 - The jpeg you want to affect.

Click the "elbowed arrow" to the left of Track 2 Header, to make Track 1 the Parent of T2.

In Track 1 header a little "M" icon will appear for Parent Overlay mode. Click this and select Custom. Choose Height Map/Add/OK

Set up a loop for preview and play with the Amplitude and other sliders till you get it as you want.

You can keyframe to start with no effect then bring it in.

To make it look more like a refection you can put a colour underneath and reduce opacity on the jpeg - or flip it with pan crop ...

thanks for the pointers, works, but i have a problem.

(this picture is of a cousins bridal party)
the picture is set to display for 11 seconds.

it zooms out from bride/groom to the whole party in 7 seconds

at the same tiem i have amirror effect on the picture which ends at their knees down.

now from 7 - 11 seconds i wanted to put the ripple in the reflection
i used crop/pan to place the top semi circle of the ripple and im getting close to the desired effect. but when i want to look at teh whole 11 seconds
its just a black screen untill the 7second mark when the ripple kicks in.

i think i have to rearrange somethings ..... or is there a trick to this

If I understand what you're describing, you probably need to have a separate track(s) to hold what you want to see before the ripple.

The parent/child relationship affects the whole track, and you only want that to kick in for the last 4 seconds.

Here's a link to Chienwork's testbench that he provided me, which appears to exactly what you want:

http://www.vegasusers.com/testbench/files/chienworks-circular-ripples.zip

The .zip file has the veg file, and all required mpg, avi, and jpg's

Kelly - I hope it's ok to post :)

Frenchy: yes, it's quite ok. If it wasn't ok, then i wouldn't have uploaded the file on the website.

If folks want a clickable link instead of having to copy & paste (or heaven forbid, retype!) ...

Hi

Having read this thread I found that the ripple effect was just the ticket but I have been trying to get it to work on just the bottom half of my event. I have tried the cookie cutter and other ideas with no luck. Has anyone got any advice on this, please?

Cheers.

Try using pan/crop in reverse on the ripple to make it only cover the bottom half of the screen.

I tried that...

It didn't look right.

The ripple seemed to start below the cente and then still affect part of the upper half. I'll play around with it longer.

Cheers.
