Dropouts During Firewire Capture

kleb wrote on 8/9/2003, 10:54 AM
Does anyone have a problem with audio dropouts during fireware capture? I checked, and my DV source tape and audio are fine. I've got two identical PC systems running Vegas 4.0c both using Windows 2000, Delta/Omni, ADS Pyro 120GB, firewire to JVCminiDV. One system caputres audio and video fine with no dropouts. The second setup produces dropouts. The differences: The good system has DirectX 8.1 and everything works fine. The system with audio dropouts has DirectX 9.0b and the only way to get a decent capture is to turn previews off under Options and set video to Smart Preview (which turns preview off during capture). I'm getting the "dropped frames during capture" dialog pop up.

There could be other issues. But, I'm curious if any problems have been reported with DirectX 9?

Thanks, Kurt

Has Sofo endorsed DirectX 9.xx?

I have DirectX 9.x and have no problems.

Usual things to check are:

1. Background applications. Use MSCONFIG to stop all startup programs from runnning.
2. Hard disk DMA. Must be turned on.
3. System BIOS. Since you have a known good system, boot into the BIOS on each machine (usually done by pressing F1, F2, or the DEL key during boot) and check that each have identical BIOS versions. Actually you may be able to see the BIOS version by simply watching the screen during the boot.

My be is the background processes.

I am using DirectX9.0B with no problems. (Under Windows XP)

The issue mentioned about background apps could honestly be the problem.

I created a dedicated "capture partition" exclusively for video capture and it has always worked flawlessly.

You may want to consider this.

Also, turn off file indexing! (It can start at the worst possible moment!)

The problem you tell about here is not neccessery about software issues, it could be hardware. Its hard to tell. How is the specs for both of your computers, like CPU, RAM, HD and so on.

I have seen lots of people here say that you should turn off any programs that is running in background (especially antivirus and so on), yes do this if you have low-end system (i doubt many of you have that since you doing video editing, am i wrong?)

My specs goes as follows:
Shuttle XPC SB51G
Cosair 512MB PC3200 (cas2)
Maxtor 80GB 8MB-Cache

Yes i never turn off ICQ or antivirus (Norton Internet Security) when i grab video from my camera and it never drop any frames.

But since you have problems, try to disable any programs running in the background.

Thanks for all the tips, I'm looking into them all. Very interesting. The first thing I've noted is the system where video capture works has more background and anti-virus applications running! Doesn't that beat all the odds!

1. Startup Manager shows some items enabled. Can Synchronization Manager be turned off? I'll leave ShuttlePro and Delta Tray in startup. But, I'll disable Ink Monitor and QuickTime Task. What's EW Message Server (msg32.exe) and can it be disabled?

2. Hard disk Ultra DMA is on for Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. But I don't see a DMA setting for the ADS Pyro 1394 storage device.

3. System BIOS is identical. Sorry I wasn't clear enough describing my environment. I'm using the same pc & bios and just booting to a second OS via a drive selector switch (for backup DMZ and for troubleshooting items like this!)

4. Turn off file indexing? Are you sure? Does anyone else do this? Mine is on.

5. Hardware could be another issue. My CPU 750Mhz, not the fastest is the weakest link for sure. I did get dropouts to occur on the "good" system but only on a random basis. Seems like the Video Capture application became taxed. I selected an IN/OUT index via the advanced capture tab and got dropouts. I did have success by turning off Preview Audio and Alway Preview Video in the Options menu. This probably allowed my system to become a little less taxed.

6. Why are all the Audio drop down menu items greyed out? Looking at the greyed menu, I see it's trying to use the wrong sound card device for audio preview. Is the feature to select an audio device inactive in this version?

Thanks again, Kurt

What about the greyed out audio menu items in Video Capture. Does this default to the System sound settings?

I'm getting the same damn thing, except my dropouts/glitches are random. I tried AVID, and had no problems at all. I am trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

I think my solution was to tax the system as little as possible. I set Options to 'Smart Video Preview' and turned off 'Audio Preview' and ended up getting usable results.

Hope that helps.

I have three computers using Vegas. Two Athalon 1000s, and one PIIII 2000. I run Norton Antivirus, and Zone Alarm in background and have never dropped a frame or had an audio dropout. Capture has worked flawlessly for me. There must be something going on with system. It is strange that Avid works????? Have you contacted Sony/Sofo?

Have you checked for updates to DirectX 9.x?

Do you have the same problems if you're capturing to an EIDE interface drive, rather than the firewire drive?

Capturing to a firewire drive has always been a bit dodgy in Vegas.
