dropped frames

A while back when i first got vegas video, i was having problems with an immense amount of dropped frames everytime i captured. This only went away when i upgraded from ME to XP. Well now my computer has crashed and i had to reformat my hard drive and im back to windows ME. Everything is working fine, except now I have the dropped frames problem again. Also, the video captures fine in windows movie maker. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is upgrading to xp really the only way?

Shouldn't make any difference which OS you use. Are you capturing to a SEPERATE hard drive? If you're capturing to the same drive you installed Windows, that can cause what you described.

Hi Tim,

I'm running ME without trouble, but some folks don't find it too good.

You might try to reduce the number of other background apps and disconnect from all network and usb devices... as BB mentioned, a separate media drive is paramount for trouble-free capture and playback.

Hi,

If you really want to edit video without hassle, you might add another HD.

Using the same drive for the system/programs and media is a recipie for headaches and wasted time. (yuk.)

The good news is that drives are cheap and easy to install. :)

alright...I'll do that, but i'm about ready to smash my computer because i need to make this movie for school and its already late. Could this have anything to do with how good my capture card is? I got it with a crappy editing program, ULead video studio for 99 bucks.

DMA = Direct Memory Access and speeds up the communication with the hard drive. Right-Click on My Computer and choose Properties. Then, in either the hard drive or hard drive controller sections, (it varies between operating systems) make sure it says "Use DMA if available" or something to that effect.
