dropped frames

sorry for the likely simple question, but it's been awhile for me capturing in Vegas... what causes the dropped frames? How can I prevent this? I'm trying to convert a vhs via my camera I'm using for a bridge, and capture drops about 50 frames every ten seconds.
How do I over come this again?

Thanks for your help to Mr. Forgetful

How is the footage making it from your cam to your pc? It seems like either the connection is not able to keep up with the bits trying to move down the line or your hard drive is not fast enough to keep up with the incoming data or you have way too many programs running on your pc or your pc is really old, etc., etc.

I would start though with the connection between the camera and the pc and then the pci card you are plugging into to get the capture.

If you are using a Sony Digital 8 to transfer, be sure to turn on the TBC and DNR in the menu. If you still drop frames after that, your tape is probably being pulled funny or is damaged. Don't use your computer for anything else while capturing.
This happens often with tapes recorded at EP or SLP and plain SP too, but the slower, the worse. TBC and DNR will eliminate most dropped frames unless the tape is really damaged.

thanks, will try that... I'm capturing via firewire and have captured several minutes from the same tape and it was fine. My PC and HDs are plenty big enough and new enough. I may have had other stuff running.. will investigate further...thanks

while my usb ports on my pc are
2.0, not long ago I bought a hub I wanted to use basically for an extension
as my other hub just had a really short cord on it, and guess what? Yep- the
new hub is not 2.0! I plugged my HD directly into my pc and it now captures
with the proper amount of drop frames (zero)!
