dropped frames?

New to the forum, i am sure this has been raised before, but when i am capturing using an IEEE firewire to sonic foundry's capture program included in Vegas Video 3.0 from a Canon XL1 i get quite a few dropped frames (both on a 1 year old Compaq Presario and on a Brand New Alienware MJ-12 with dual processor and 1 GB of RAM).

my friend has no problems when using Sony's DVGate program, but i do not have a VAIO like he does.

suggestions for a better capture process???

thanks

Make sure your drive is DMA enabled.
Make sure you capture on a different harddrive/partition than the one where your OS is installed.
Make sure you drives are defragmented.

That's about it...

I had problems with a dual system when my old system would not drop frames.
Turns out that everytime I had my network connected, it would drop frames.(network on motherboard). Ao anytime I capture, I take the cable out, No dropped frames.
cheers
