Dropped Frames and Dells

I convinced a friend to go with Vegas for editing his home movies and can't seem to resolve a dropped frames issue.
Every once and awhile during capture via firewire he will drop 30-40 frames. I searched thru the forum and read the stuff at vasst dma is enabled he's capturing to a seperate drive. The pc is a new Dell Dimension 3000 with XP.
I'm convinced it's something Dells got running in the backround.
Anyone with a similar setup?
Thanks for any suggestions

Have you tried something like EndItAll?

Also check to see that the firewire cable is okay--try using a different one---As Ed said, first turn off all unecessary resources like anti-virus, firewall etc.

I have a Dell 4550 and there was a tremendous amount of junk loaded on it when it arrives. Plus there was some strange Dell partition on the drive not visible in Explorer.

I don't even bother with removing programs and such.

Just reformat the drive and start with a clean install. If it still drops frames you know you have a hardware incompatibility.

I use 3 dells as edit computers, I never had a proplem like that. But it could also be bad, tape, a dirty head in the camcorder, or the use of mutli brand tapes. You should always stick with one brand of tape, because each brand will use a different lubracant to protect the camcorders heads for playback and recording.

I have also noticed, if I tape on a sony camera, and then input the footage on a different brand camcorder, there will be some tape dropout, so I stick with the same brand camcorder to input the footage. No problems:)

The Dell 3000 is pretty low end. It doesn't have a graphics card and uses the graphics chip on the motherboard.

Also does he have a Dimension 3000 with a Celeron or a P4.

I would not recommend Celerons for editing.

I have a Dell 8300 that I use without too many issues.

Unforunatley it is a Celeron.

Do you think adding a graphics card to the mix would help with the dropped frame issue?

I had problems with my email going out and checking, which would then fire anti-virus. Would drops some frames when that happened.

I too run a Dell. Once I shut email off, dropped frames stopped too.

DV capture is a very easy task for any modern computer. Graphic card or cpu have no impact on this, really, once we talk about recent material.

1.check with Scenalyser or another capture utility.
2. uncheck "enable DV device control" and try again.
3. try capturing with the same camcorder used for shooting, if it is not the case in your current capture process.

Wouldn't using features on the motherboard possibly affect output?
