Dual CPU Hyper Thread (HT) support?

Krona wrote on 12/18/2003, 4:19 PM
I previously asked why my rendering was so slow and here is a follow up question to that.

Using “Task Manager” (Ctrl Alt Del on Windows XP) that during rendering my CPU Usage is only an average of 50%. It doesn’t matter if I’m rendering .wmv, .avi or any other format.
I have One 3 GHz P4 with Hyper Thread (almost works like 2 CPU’s) so in the “Task Manager” I see 2 CPU’s.
When rendering only “one” or them is showing usage the “second” CPU is almost idle every now and then there will be a spike.

When I do the same thing (convert .avi to .wmv) in Windows Movie Maker “both” CPU’s are working at almost 100%.

So my questions are.
Could this be the reason for my slow rendering speed?
Does Vegas 4 support Dual CPU?
Maybe a better question, does it support HT technology?

Thanks for you help.

It supports it, but I would not say it's well optimized for it. Audio renders on its own thread, video renders on its own thread. Within that split, it's fairly linear from what I've read.

You can do a search here to see what kind of results people are getting with dual cpus. You can also search for "rendertest" which will give you some results to compare.

We run a Dual Xeon 3.06GHz P4, so it acts as if there is 4 processors. When we render I notice that only one of the processors graphs in Task Manager shows that it is running. The other 3 seem as if they are idle with little peaks every now and then. When we run other programs they go so fast because they can utilize the HT.
In preferences there is an option to Disable Dual Processors but having it checked or unchecked doesnt' seem to help.

Just curious - Lamont -
How long does it take your system to render say a 1 hour AVI (dv format) to mpeg2?

I am dying over here with my 800mghz P3 lol..

All day long I render out Mini CD projects so that the final MPEG1 352x240 is less than 30megs. The videos run @ 2mins30secs. These usually take about 10 minutes.
When I render 10 min to MPEG1 is seems to take @ 1 1/2 hours. But this depends on how much Text/Titles/Generated Media I have also.
We also render these same stats on P4, 2.4GHz's and they seem to take about the same amount of time.

Now, when we run Premiere Pro on the Dual's, they blaze during rendering. Including showing all graph's going up to nearly 100% across the board. Man, it is quick! Rendering these same progects in less than 3 minutes.

I know we have some long form DVD work comin up so I'll repost after that.

All in all though I'm not impressed by the Dual Processor Support in VEGAS.

BASically there isn't dual porcessor or HT support in VV (yet) way to use it though seems to be that you can run mulitple instances of VV.
e.g. rendering two projects will be the same as rendering one.

Thanks for your replies guys, it’s seems as my suspicion was right. Lamont_Dennis seems to have the same problem I’m having (but four time worse)
I normally convert to wmn for online use, and I now use Windows Media Encoder for wmv conversion instead of VV, it’s about 2-5 times faster.

For what it's worth, if you render at 352x240 for viewing on a computer monitor, the video will have the incorrect aspect ratio. You need to render at 320x240 instead. It's the old rectangular vs. square pixel thing.

I have a dual cpu, and I don't know what all the fuss is about. My computer takes advantage of it and it takes about a min and a half to render every min of video. But I don't use tones of effects....actually I use no effects, only just fade in's and fade outs. I find that it renders incredible quickly.
