Dual Layer Burners

I am thinking of getting aDual Layer Burner as my single layer one has just died on me.

Usually I likle to wait for things to settle down after new technology is released into the market.

Any recomendations?

I would suggest the NEC ND-3520A. They have the best rating, and the first link is the cheapest current price at $55.99 shipped.

NEC has wisely chosen to wait on a firmware update for DL support due to the current problems with DL media. They plan a future firmware update when the technology for home use becomes more reliable. I have a rack of eight of those burners.

go to www.cdrinfo.com - they have a lot of reviews of various burners.

Most of the newer burners will burn DL; I'd suggest though looking for a DL burner that will let you set the booktype on +R media to DVD-ROM (for both DL and SL media); I've been finding that this really helps playability issues in older players for SL media and is manditory for creating a DL that plays in many newer players.

My drive died about two months ago. I got a Pioneer A09. It has been fantastic. Certainly no coasters, and I've sent out a few dozen DVDs with no complaints.

I'm just starting to use 8x media with it, and no problems so far (my Ritek G04 and Maxell 2x media is starting to run out).

The dual layer technology is too incompatible and too expensive ($8.00 v.s $0.40) for me to care about at this point, so I haven't burned a single dual layer disk yet.

We have 9 dvd writers here, all Pioneer from 106 to 109 models, all work extremely well, using Taiyo Yuden discs exclusively. We use them for DVD-Video and also DVD-ROM for protools session backups, as well as CD burning. No problems at all and no reason to change brands, so we'll continue to use Pioneer in future...

Where do you get your Taiyo Yuden, and are they branded Taiyo Yuden or are they sold under a different brand name? Since the newer Riteks supposedly aren't as good as the old G04, I'm thinking of changing.

fwiw, I get my TY at meritline - it looks like my last batch of Ritek G04's is trash; I've been getting a very high failure rate on burns.. The TY's have no branding on them, but the media code on the disk is YUDEN

Does the Pioneer A09 do the feature to make a DVD player think a DVD-R is a DVD ROM? (That booktype thing...)
