I went and read the article in the link. The A06 is an A05 that burns both -R and +R so I would guess the firmware update (flash) woud work for the A05 too. By the way how come the demo only did 100 meg on each layer? Was the disk a regular -R DVD blank one or a -R disk that has "dual layer" capacity. I didn't get that from ther article.
Philips was hinting that this might be the case for some 8x DVD+R drives as well (less than 8x models apparently have a laser that's too weak, IIRC). But they didn't guarantee anything.
It's important to note that the DVD Forum has yet to finalize the dual-layer specs for recordables, which is why pioneer hasn't put out the firmware yet.
But pioneer has been known to jump the gun, putting out products before final specs were available, causing compatibility problems (mostly media). But it does look like it's coming real soon.
I've been digging around since I posted this. The whole thing sounds a little hoaky to me. The Pioneer A07/107 is coming out yet they chose to demonstrate on a 106. Maybe to sell more units before the release of the 107?
...donp326 is right in being suspicious of their burning only two 100MB layers instead of the full capacity of a DVD-9.
The technology I fear is at least two years away for many of us.
Nah. They may be slightly jumping the gun, and things like "free dual layer w/ firmware update" may end up less then true, but it's coming quicker than 2 years. A bunch of these will be out in spring, and they will be ALL OVER the place by Christmas.
