Dual MP2800 CPU and HDV?

PeterWright wrote on 2/9/2005, 4:34 AM
I have a dual AMD 2000+ desktop PC with a Tyan Thunder motherboard.

I have been informed that the M/B will take up to dual MP2800 cpu's.

These, plus a RAM upgrade to 2 Gb would cost A$1200 (about US$900)

The question is - with the coming of HDV (Z1 on order ...) will these handle HDV editing ok, or would it be better to think about a new PC?

Any advice appreciated.

Peter

Peter,
the only issue you might face is do AMD CPUs have the SSI instruction set the same as the P4s? This is what the Cineform codec uses to get the speed up.
Believe me you do NOT want to try editing a m2t stream, think < 1 fps playback.
Bob.

for that price you could get a Tyan duel Opteron MB & 2 Opteron 240 CPU's & at least 512mb ram, which would blow the MP's away. Probley 1gb ram for ~$60 more.

I'd recomend that instead.

I agree. Step up with the Opterons, or better, look to Intel if the $$ are there.

Ironicly, I upraded to a AMD 64 a few weeks ago (AMD 64 3000 939, Asus A8V Deluxe, 512mb DDR 3200, all overnighted for just under $400). After I ordered the parts I looked into the opterons. I could of gotten an Opteron 240, the Tyan duel CPU board (only running 1 cpu) & the 512mbRAM for $50 more. :(

I make my self feel better byreming myself Win64 isn't retail yet. :)
